Half-written text on teen driver's phone at fatal crash

Wednesday, November 02, 2011

By Kaitlynn Riely, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A teenage girl from Butler County was in the midst of sending a text message when she died Tuesday night in a one-vehicle accident, state police said.

Alexis Lynn Summers, 17, of Saxonburg, was killed when the 2003 Subaru Legacy she was driving hit a tree after 10 p.m. off Hannastown Road in Jefferson, Butler County.

Her vehicle veered to the right berm of the roadway and onto a slight grass embankment, police said. Ms. Summers then apparently overcompensated while steering back onto the road. Her car spun around and hit the tree. The Butler County deputy coroner pronounced her dead at the scene.

"She was actively texting at the time of impact," said Lt. Eric Hermick of the Butler barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police.

Ms. Summers was wearing a seatbelt.

Crash site investigators said they found a cell phone at the scene, with a text message partially sent, Lt. Hermick said. He declined to release information about the message or the intended recipient, citing confidentiality laws.

Ms. Summers, a senior at Knoch High School in Saxonburg, died just hours after the state Senate gave final approval to a ban on texting while driving.

Police frequently receive calls about distracted drivers, including those texting while driving, Lt. Hermick said. He said he hopes the proposed state texting ban, a primary offense, will be a preventative measure.

"We hope it's a bigger deterrent, because it will educate the motoring public that they can't text while driving," he said.

See, if she was riding a mule in Montana while texting she would have likely not have been killed!

Oh god, the next thing you'll hear this is a disease. There is no personal accountability, it's what mom gave me.

What if she was on a family talk plan and the mom actually gave her the phone?

This is why I do all my texting via Siri. My last text will be something like "I'll be home soon I just need to OH DEAR GOD CRASH BANG Get his wallet".

In other words, "Distracted driver dies."

Well I tell you, this is the first time something like this has ever happened.

I did not mean for it to be an excuse or defense. I simply meant that some people simply cannot put down their electronic pacifiers.

I have seen police texting while driving, I have watched a semi truck driver texting go through a red light, people fail to go at green lights every day on my way to work. They are reading, texting, pushing buttons . . . it is a real jungle out there.

Some people are subject to Darwin, nothing they can do about it. All you can do is watch out for them.

How can a text be partially sent? Either it was sent or not sent. Maybe she started creating the text before she drove off, set the phone down when she started driving and then hit the tree for another reason... like a spider or bee in the car.

Damn anti-technologists.

Re: Texting teen drives into tree and dies.

Instead of partially sent, I think the cop meant it's partially typed up. Meaning it was left off mid-sentence thus implicating it was composed as she's driving. "OMG Molly, ur dad is like totally hot, I dreamt he cam on me over m" It makes little sense not to finish this juicy train of thought even for a teenager.

Re: Texting teen drives into tree and dies.

I send texts while driving by talking into the phone. I don't if it's common, but it's really easy just to talk into the phone and it transcribes it.

Yeah, a vehicular manslaughter conviction would be better. Especially for the victim's family.

Re: Texting teen drives into tree and dies.

Excuse me for being so brash, but what's the point of posting this story? She was 17 years old. Repeat, seventeen years old. Anyone that knows anything about adolescent behavioral decision-making knows that they evaluate the possible risks and consequences of their actions differently than mature adults do. She falsely believed, as millions of other teens and adults do, that she was capable of dividing her attention between texting and driving. She paid with her life and, thankfully, took no one with her. End of story. Texting while driving is a problem. No one wants to share the road with people like this. These are points everyone should agree upon. Please stand up and speak if you've never driven irresponsibly or while distracted at some point in your life.

Still, what's the point of this particular story?

I see little to no discussion here, just petty, failed attempts to find humor in the suffering of others. Just another dumb thread started by someone who has way too much time on his hands.

Stick to the big boys - politicians, abusive judges, child molesters, dumb tattoos, smelly hippies, Floridians, mgb83 or whatever the hell his name is. They deserve it and/or ask for it.

At the risk of sounding even more dramatic than I already do, I'd rather have a 100 "Alexis Lynn Summers'" in this world who have the potential to grow and learn from their mistakes than one person who finds it necessary to propagate and make light of tragic stories like this. Coming full circle, I think I understand why people do this - because their life fucking sucks and it's easier to point the finger in any direction but where it belongs. Right square on their chest. Sweet catharsis.
