So... do _you_ use the interrobang? DO YOU?!

The INTERROBANG was created to fill a gap in our punctuation system where writers often used typographically cumbersome and unattractive combinations of the question mark and exclamation mark to punctuate rhetorical statements where neither the question nor an exclamation alone exactly served the writer.

Mr. Speckter called his mark INTERROBANG from the Latin for query and the proofreader's term for exclamation. Most dictionaries have spelled the word correctly, although several other spellings with no logical genesis have appeared.

At the time the INTERROBANG was introduced in 1962, a number of graphic designs were sent to the magazine from many sources. An example from this outpouring is shown above. Many newspapers and magazines and talk shows reported on the new mark. In an April, 1962 editorial, The Wall Street Journal deemed this punctuation exactly right for "'Who forgot to put gas in the car?' where the question mark alone just isn't adequate." The INTERROBANG can convey in print an attitude, curiosity, and wonder.

American Type Founders issued a metal typeface in 1966 called Americana which included the INTERROBANG. Remington Rand included the key as an option on its 1968 typewriters, commenting that the INTERROBANG "expresses Modern Life's Incredibility." In 1996, a New York art studio designed variations of the mark for each of the fonts in its computer library.
Apparently it has been around nearly 50 years. Now I know it's there, I'll probably just select Wingdings2 font and the right square bracket key.

Apparently one should be able to use it via Lucida Sans Unicode which is available as an option here on the forums but I couldn't see it when I checked. I also see that "ALT+8253" can sometimes work.

Does anyone reading this have any other favourite funny typographical characters that don't defeat mosty word processors?

I use the en dash and em dash when appropriate.

I thought that the interbang was a dumb idea when the idea was first explained to us in third grade. My opinion hasn't changed.

Testing in Chrome:
Alt 248 (degrees)
Alt 241 (plus or minus)
Alt 8253 = (doesn't produce interbang)

I thought it was a great idea when I first read a news story on it about 15 years ago, as I never liked how "?!" looked in print, but I only use it sparingly. It was never mentioned in any elementary or high school English class I took (although the English grammar/punctuation reference book I still have from high school was first released in 1948, so that might be why).

I have not heard of the interrobang. Looks like it would be hard to read in some print.

If a new character "‽" is created since "?!" is considered bad form like "???" or "!!!" then how does the ellipsis "..." get a pass since it is three periods in a row?

I don't use the interrobang, but I like the soundtrack:

I have on occasion used the fourth primary color, squant.

I had no idea it was so old. I sometimes just type out the exclamation mark and question mark together when the sentence needs such an emphasis. I wonder if there's a tweak that could be done in Outlook or Word that would automatically insert it if you type the other two marks together?

Interrobang: the sound created when you smack someone with a hard object during an interrogation.

Wow, B.C. sure got some comic mileage out of the interrobang.

I caught that while I was hiking through Holland.

That's one that gets on nerves, too, but the last couple of jobs that I've been at haven't wanted them to be used.

Never heard of the interrobang in any of my editing classes or experience. Interesting. I don't mind the appearance of an exclamation point next to a question mark, but I can see where the interrobang could be used.

I prefer the term "Quesclamation Mark".

Sounds like a dirty sex scenario to me. I'm not sure exactly what it involves. But it's dirty. And there are black guys present.
