OMG: Was that neutrino speeding?

I am highly dubious about the result, but the experimenters claim that neutrinos slightly exceded the speed of light, arriving about 60 ns faster than the expected 2.4 ms transit time.

http://news.yahoo.com/roll-over-eins...215819033.html

This is only (about) 1.000025 times the speed of light, but if there is not an error in the experiment, it overturns "science as we know it."

I envision a raucous party in the neutrino locker room as they celebrate their victory over the slowpoke photons. (I also envison a withdrawal of this claim in a few days or months as they figure out what went wrong.)

So does this mean that time travel is possible?

Re: OMG: Was that neutrino speeding?

Well that was disappointing. I came into the topic expecting some guys who looked like this
Spoiler:
were caught speeding and given a ticket.

Re: OMG: Was that neutrino speeding?

This seemed unlikely to me, until I read that they reran the experiment thousands of times and kept getting the same result, then sat on the result for months trying to disprove what they'd found.

So, if there was an error in the measurement, the reran the procedure and kept getting the same error?

Hell, he have had an issue with superconducting cavities at my work for the last 18+ months, we keep repeating the tests and still have the same problem. Eureka!

Well, to be fair they weren't just accepting the measurement at face value. It still seems like a longshot to me, but the people making the claim aren't idiots.

Great, now every time I post about psychic powers and acupuncture being fake I'll have to field "your science was wrong about the speed of light!" over and over as if that was a valid argument.

It doesn't necessarily overturn science. They said the same thing when they found out that light is actually faster than the speed of light, but that was based on a certain specific set of conditions. And it was really just a technicality. I'd like to see more information on this.

I thought "Action at a Distance" overturned science (especially in light of this new discovery).

Or at least proved that we are all inside the Matrix.

Re: OMG: Was that neutrino speeding?

I have always thought that we too often limit ourselves by thinking that we have any real grasp on anything regarding this place in which we call the universe.

But, I don't know how accurate a man-made speedometer which can process the speed of light can actually be.

This new information changes absolutely nothing in my life.

I just say fuck it.........fuck it all, right in the universe's largest theoretical black hole.

The bartender says we don't server tachyons here. A tachyon walks into a bar.

Yeah, I don't think it will hold up. But it was fun before it lasted.

Re: OMG: Was that neutrino speeding?

The neutrino may have sped that fast due to dimension hopping. That's right there may be other dimensions.
