I think you are hitting the nail on the head. No matter what happens, they want to say they took all precautions, whether we walk back into our homes unaided, or they need Jacques Cousteau's family to find us.

Nobody else seems to be asking, so I guess I will: what is "OBX"? Is this an acronym everybody knows but me?

Weather channel still has a guy on the beach at Nag Head. Seems a bit crazy. You cant even see him on the camera in all the winds and sand blowing around.

Yer slacking in your old age. I thought it was an airport designation so I put "OBX" in Google and the first hit was "Outer Banks NC."

How much airtime does Mayor Nanny get? They're even showing his presser on my DC affiliate.

Lets them take a breather from saying the same things over and over.

Reading people's ridiculous tweets from areas where the storm has been. Some favorites:

"This weather is very relaxing."

"My dad was mad that I slept until three. I thought there was a hurricane going on; I didn't know I had things to do."

"Dear hurricane Irene, pleeeeeease come back. I don't want to work tonight. Thanks girl!"

Looks like it's picking up speed and moving eastward. Hope it passes over Delmarva quickly. NC and Hampton Roads have gotten drenched.

This is a cool tracker I've been using to follow the progress:

As I sit here awaiting the NYC apocalypse called Irene, I thought I would answer you:
The subways in particular are being moved from open yards to underground tunnels to sit out the storm. In past disaster preparations, I have seen them densely parked on the express tracks, leaving the local tracks open for further movement. There are so many trains to shuffle around that the MTA says it takes them 8 HOURS to complete this process. I don't know about the buses but assume they just move them to the multi-story garages/terminals that are scattered in various spots. They do not want them in open air lots.

I expect them to close the bridges at some point. Once when the GF and I were vacationing in the Upper Peninsula, MI, experiencing severe winds (although nothing like the ones heading here now), a truck driver on the Mackinac Bridge witnessed a passenger car near his truck getting caught in an updraft and becoming airborne. It plummeted over the side railings and fell a long way into the Straits. The authorities didn't believe him at first but then another eyewitness called in a report. Only then did they close that bridge. A couple days later they found the submerged car; no survivors of course.

My GF is abandoning her 32nd floor apt. near Union Square and relocating to my 7th flr. place near the Village. Power outages, blown out windows...can be a real possibility.

Irene is already losing speed and force, from the NYT tracker.

I wonder if male-named hurricanes blow harder than female-named hurricanes.

I know it's a relative non-event (granted, NC and Delmarva will get soaked) when they show commercials during 'non-stop' news coverage in DC.

I had a tornado with 125mph winds pass over me last year and no buildings in forest hills toppled over. Not even the 30 story one next door

I have to say that TWC has upped their babe factor. They had a brunette on earlier that was smoking hot and now there is some hot blonde on. So props to them.

There was a hurricane named after me in 2007, it was the strongest one of the season. Take that for what it's worth.

Not sure when it happened but I see our cable provider now has TWC in the HD channels...so the eye-candy is especially nice

On a weird side-note, it started raining in the mountains out here so we're getting flood warning alerts for here while watching the flooding out east.
