Widely accepted practices that amaze you with thier stupidity

I meant to start this thread last winter and completely spaced it. Up in these parts, after the water freezes in the winter folks walk out there and go ice fishing. When I used to go ice fishing I'd always be a little nervous because I had that voice in the back of my head saying the ice could break. Well it never did and here I am. The thing that amazes me, is that people drive out onto the ice in cars and trucks. Inevitably, there are a few stories each year about cars falling through and yet people keep doing it. And they park near each other as well, almost like a makeshift parking lot. The funny part is, when one does fall through, the owner has to pay to get it removed from the water. Morans.
I had a friend in Texas who moved up here last summer and didn't believe me when I told her people did this until she saw it for herself. What practices boggle your mind that other people probably wouldn't even believe?

Great. Now I have the ice-shack scenes from "Grumpy Old Men" running through my head all day. Not to mention the polka music.

Re: Widely accepted practices that amaze you with thier stupidity

Saying "God Bless You" after someone sneezes to prevent their soul from leaving their body seems pretty stupid to me.

This drives me nuts. Growing up, I was just taught to say "excuse me" after you sneezed. That should cover everything. I don't need to hear other people's comments on the event.

Spelling "their" as "thier", especially in thread titles.

Yes, because that's exactly why people do that.

(And yes, I realize that was how the tradition started long ago. I've said "Bless you" many times in my life, but never once did I do it because I feared for the person's soul.)

Standing throughout sporting events and concerts. Granted, I don't like attending either one but when everyone has a seat, I don't get why everybody is standing the whole time. Every time I have gone to these kinds of things, it just boggles my mind.

Or the people that yell 'to' the refs. What's the point? They can't hear you. Even if they did, its not like they are going to change their decision based on what you yelled. Also applies to yelling to players.

I'll also add the anger towards fans of the other team. I swear some of these people would physically harm them if they had the opportinity. Just don't get that.

Say "gesundheit" instead. It means health, so all you're doing is wishing the sneezing person good health.

And while some will accuse me of baiting, religion.

Ask "how are you doing?", "how are you?" when they absolutely don't care how you're really doing.

At this rate, this one won't be around too much longer. I'd like to say that these programs are being replaced with more intelligent fare, but I don't think they are.
