How do I ask for more money from my employer?

Is there a professional way to say that you want more money because youíre being asked to do extra work? Basically, this new group into which Iíll eventually be moving requires me to occasionally (maybe 1 or 2 weeks a month) be on call for support, including the weekends. Iím not sure what my future co-workersí salaries are, but if this thing is going to take up more of my time, including free time, then I think compensation should reflect as such. Iíve already tried to hint at it by inquiring whether my title will change, hoping for the manager to volunteer the info, but that didnít yield the desired effect. Might you have any ideas? Or, should I just keep my mouth shut for now?

"I would like a raise."

"I can not take on these additional tasks, as they are outside my job description. You will have to promote me to an appropriate position."

According to most pornos anal sex with the boss results in more financial compensation. Not sure how well that translates to the real world though.

how is the company doing? if it's going to the crapper, i'd keep your mouth shut for now. if it's doing well, you can talk about your new duties, and when it comes up that you will be on call, just ask if there will be any additional compensation for you being on call.

What is the demand for this same position in the job market? If there is high demand for your skills, that gives you a bit more leverage. Unemployment is pretty bad right now and I know a lot of companies are not too keen on giving any raises.

Are you salaried or hourly? If you're hourly, where I live you have to be paid if you're on call.

"Sorry, Mr. Vipper, but currently we have a freeze on salary increases. We appreciate your inquiry.

...oh, by the way, on Monday we have a temp coming in to train with you....as a backup."

I like that suggestion.

Unfortunately, my would-be boss isn't attractive enough for the porn approach.

Take your boss out for drinks and get him drunk. Then get pictures of him with another woman, another guy, sheep, or whatever works best.

Re: How do I ask for more money from my employer?

As a manager I have no problem with someone asking me for more money, no matter what the state of the company or the US. I listen to all they have to say and if I agree I make every effort to take care of them. Your manager would have to be a hard-core prick to take a request for a raise and turn it into something that makes you worry about your job.

Re: How do I ask for more money from my employer?

I say ask for more money... Then when they are not happy about your request, I'll come in and say I can do it for less then what they are paying you now...

I agree with looking at the state of the company before proceeding with the request. It sucks to be working your ass off for less money, and having the feeling the company is taking you for a ride. However, having a job in this economy with the added benefit of being given more job duties is far better then not having a job, or the fear of not having enough work to sustain your position.

Who knows, maybe your company is rolling in the money and a raise is one request away. good luck!

Re: How do I ask for more money from my employer?

Wow...i'd hate to have to work for a company that you would have to worry about losing your job just for asking about pay in a new position as others are implying here.

If it is a major job position change your boss should have had a sit down with you to explain it all. The fact that you are trying to 'hint' to him to get information doesn't sound like a well managed group. Sounds like you aren't even sure of what your new job duties will be, which isn't good.

If it is a minor shift..then ask, "I understand my new position may require being On Call, is there additional pay/compensation for that ?"

Now, what you consider adequate compensation may be greatly different from what the company does.... being on call in itself doesn't necessarily justify a large pay raise, and how much of that on call time will you typically be working ? It's one thing to be called to work 4 out of 7 days being on call...it's another to be called once every couple months.

We get 4 hours added to paycheck once a month for being on call 4-6 days....and being hourly get paid the standard overtime for coming in...but the actual On Call pay isn't that much.
I don't know anyone who gets a significant amount of on call pay....usually it's a token gesture since it 'goes with the territory' of those type of job positions.
