I used to set my alarm clock when I was a kid, but could never see anything One of these days I'm going to drive away from the city lights to catch this.

I've been up at a cabin on a lake in northern Wisconsin several times for this. A place where there are almost no lights, and you can see all the stars, including the Milky Way belt, and even satellites. You can see a meteor streak every 7 - 10 seconds there during this storm. It's fun.

I envy your situation. Stuck in the city, I've only had the chance a few times to see what you described. It's quite awe-inspiring to see the Milky Way. The first time I saw a satellite I thought it was a UFO for a moment. Had no idea they were visible.

Venusian - even though I won't be able to enjoy the sight, thanks for posting it so others will have the opportunity!

Re: Reminder: Perseid Meteor shower tonight

Went to a local National Forest area to watch the shower with my girlfriend. Unfortunately the sun sets late here, and she had to work tomorrow so we were only able to stay out till around midnight. I think I maybe saw 4-5 meteors, but from what I read after I got home, I read that the best time to see them was after midnight (not sure if this is local everywhere, or to the east coast, or what) and that I should have been looking towards Perseus, which I guess I was, looking at my sky software. At least I was able to teach her a bit about some of the little astronomy I know, which was fun.

I wish I still lived in New Mexico for just these occasions. Drive out somewhere between Clovis and Ft Sumner and the night sky is just unbelieveable. Class 2 on the Bortle Dark-Sky Scale.
