A friend named Lois. 102, still drives. When I'm tired, I think of her and STFU. My grandfather died at 97, his sister was 106 when she died.

My great grandmother was 105 (youngest guess. She had no birth certificate.) when she died. She starved herself to death, convinced that her kids were trying to poison her to get their inheritance. She also smoked a corn cob pipe constantly.

My wife's Aunt Helen is 95. She doesn't move so fast and is as deaf as a post, but she's still sharp.

Re: oldest person you know? living or dead

My great-grandfather lived to be 99. He came to New York directly "off the boat" from Sicily in 1903 (his was the first name on the passenger manifest, which I always thought was cool). He died when I was 10.

None of my grandparents made it past 80.

I have an aunt who is 100. Was involved in a historic court case against the board of ed in chicago. http://bulk.resource.org/courts.gov/...3.74-1579.html

She has some pretty awesome stories, the best involve her travelling through europe and living like a queen on $20 a day!

My best friends step-grandma is 103. She hiked the Grand Canyon most recently when she was 95. She's still kicking, although not hiking anymore.

Re: oldest person you know? living or dead

My grandmother turned 104 earlier this month. She's out of it now, sleeps most of the day. She used to tell us about how her family came to America on a ship from England in 1912, just weeks after the Titanic disaster. They were very nervous.

Not family, that's for sure. Only one grandparent made it to 70.

Dead - Best friend's grandmother lived to be 102.

Alive - Neighbor across the street is 91. Slowed down physically thanks to a fall in the home a few months ago necessitating a 24/7 in-home caretaker, but still has it all upstairs.

That strikes me as funny for some reason. I can picture an entire shipload of people on edge for an entire trip because of what happened to the Titanic. I'd bet they didn't come with miles of an iceberg without everyone sounding the alarm.

Re: oldest person you know? living or dead

I had a great-grandmother who lived to be 102. She was in relatively great health until a few months before she died when she was diagnosed with cancer. Even then, she never really deteriorated that much physically until the very end. Mentally, she was sharp as a tack until the day she died and knew seemingly everything there was to know about our family. I always wonder how long she would have lived if not for the cancer. She didn't learn to drive until she was in her seventies and she and a friend went on a roadtrip out of state to visit family and got lost. They ended up stopping at a pretty rough bar and the bartender called my grandmother. His first words were, "Lady, you're not gonna believe where I'm calling from."

Re: oldest person you know? living or dead

I used to work at an assisted living home, so I knew a whole lot of old people. The average age was probably in the 80s, with only a few 90s, and one who had passed the century mark. I just googled her and found out she died a couple years ago, but she did make it to 104.
