Some free medical advice...

When you go to see your doctor, do NOT come in requesting pain medication by NAME, or demanding a particular test (ie: MRI) for your problem, as then I am almost 100% sure not to accomodate you (even if I was initially inclinded to order or prescribe those things in the first place), k? thx.

But the drug commercials explicitly say to "ask your doctor about ____________"!?!

So your doctor is not going to order a $1,000+ imaging study just because you ask for it? Really?

This seems to be a fairly common problem. People come into the doctor's office knowing what's wrong with them, and since they know what drug has best helped them in the past, they want that prescription . . . but the doctor isn't interested in their opinion.

Don't mind if I do, but next time remember to use the PM button for these sorts of requests.

So you would not give them the test or medication that you feel is the best course of action simply because they had the audacity to ask for it?

I'm not talking about insisting on one type of medication, I'm talking about telling the doctor what has worked in the past.

I would find another doctor, one that listens to his patients.

Re: Some free medical advice...

Drug seekers are a problem. But the way you frame this, you do come across as a bit of a prick towards those who might actually do some research first to figure out what is wrong with themselves. Along with any research on symptoms would come possible treatments.

I wouldn't discourage people from caring about their health outside of your office.

I understand your disdain for people coming in already having diagnosed themselves and wanting a specific drug without you doing your job first. But saying you then won't give them that drug no matter what is a bit overly-reactive.

DING DING DING

We have a winner for why healthcare costs are out of control!!

Doctors are greedy, entitled dicks with God Complexes!!

No one could possibly know what they know!!!

I mean, they studied your aliments years ago in a medical school, while you have only done possibly 100's of hours of research into something thats been bothering you for years!
How dare you apply your potentially greater intellect to a problem that may possibly be life or death for you!

Re: Some free medical advice...

If I go in and act stupid and let Mr. Doctor do all the work then that seems to make him happiest. When I go see a woman doctor, I go in, I tell her what's up, what I want done about it and *poof* it happens. Interesting, eh?

Re: Some free medical advice...

The few times I've done that with my doctor, he either agrees with me or tells me why I am wrong and goes into a brief but detailed explanation as to why. That's why he is my doctor.

You, sir, would not be my doctor.

See, right there you are coming off sounding confrontational. And to answer your question, no, I am not a "drug seeker".

Re: Some free medical advice...

Yes, God forbid anyone take active participation in their own health and well being. If you really are a doctor, you should already know that most men talk to their golf buddies about their treatments and medical options for things like prostate cancer, etc. They will already have an opinion and an idea of what they need before they come to your office. Too bad you violate the hippocratic oath because your own ego is too big and sensitive to handle people taking care of themselves first. You should lose your license, if you still have one.

Re: Some free medical advice...

Shut up doc. and give me my Percocet script for #120 tablets quick. I've got to get to my next appointment for a Norco 10/325mg script. I've got to hit my quota with my drug pimp, or I wont get my cash and heroin fix for the week.

I think that's what he's talking about.

Okay, Dr. TallGuyMe, what if I came in to your office and said "I fell and broke my arm. I want you to prescribe that I rub some dirt on it and get the fuck over it already." What do you do then? Huh?

Isn't everyone in pain a drug seeker? Why else would they be at the Doctor's in the first place?

Last time I saw my doctor, he asked if I worked in the medical field and was surprised when I told him that I didn't. Just because I have an average or above intelligence and use fancy words and can remember my medication dosages without having to look at the bottle doesn't mean I'm a junkie.
