I just had an Ocular Migraine

I had one about a year ago and didn't know what was going on. It went away and I thanked God it was over. Well I just went through another one. It's pretty freaky. I looked up my symptoms on google to figure out what it was. Here's a pretty good example of what happens except mine has flashing colors kinda like a kaleidoscope:

Anybody else ever have this happen?

The vision thing yes but with no headache. It used to happen every few months when I was a teenager. It starts as a little blurry spot that grows into a ring just like the pictures. Then it disappears. I always thought it was some kind of petit mal.

I've gotten these a few times but not too often. No head pain - just the vision thing.

Re: I just had an Ocular Migraine

I've had them a number of times. Pretty much as you describe, with no pain. I was starting to think it was some kind of brain tumour.

About a year and a half ago I had one that was bizarre. I had a weird sensation in my head, and then my vision in my right eye started flashing. I thought I was having a stroke, so I figured I'd better get upstairs and call an ambulance. When I started to walk, I fully expected to fall over, but found I could walk normally, plus I had no loss of grip in my right hand. That's when I figured it wasn't a stroke. I did have a bit of a headache for a little while after that one, and lost my peripheral vision (maybe about 40%?) in that eye for a couple of hours, and to a lesser extent for maybe a couple of weeks. It's hard to tell when it was back to normal.

I did go to the doctor, and he agreed, as did my ophthalmologist, that it was an ocular migraine. Scary stuff, though.

I've only had one 'real' migraine that resulted in a trip to the ER. Ahh, Demerol... Real migraine sufferers have my complete sympathy.

Re: I just had an Ocular Migraine

That, fellow Otter, is exactly the kind of "aura" episode I experience before my migraines.

Typically it goes like this:
1. I get an odd disassociated feeling.
2. Almost immediately I notice an anomaly in my vision which then grows into an aura.
3. Over 30-45 minutes it expands, sometimes covering up to 60% of my field of vision. It affects both of my eyes identically.
4. As the aural episode ends, I start feeling nauseous (in my teens I would sometime vomit at this point, just to relieve the discomfort).
5. Any minute now the pain may hit.

When I was younger it would hit every time and be generally debillitating for several hours, but as I grew older, especially as I neared 30, they became less frequent with less severe pain. Nowadays (41) I get one or perhaps a cluster of two about each 4-6 weeks, with 3 out of 5 bringing only moderate pain. I tried treating it with Midrin back in the early 90s but didn't like the side effects so I switched to Excedrin Migraine and a dark/quiet room for relief.

Good luck.

Re: I just had an Ocular Migraine

When I was in HS (1986-90) I got them for the better part of three years. I described them as "flashers" or "amoebas" that would change shape and slowly move across my field of vision. There was no headache during the event, but one would come on afterwards and then I would feel extremely tired, no matter the time of day. The headache itself was not that bad, but the vision impariment was rather...ummm...inconvenient.

As suddenly as they started, they stopped. Have not had one since HS (knock-on-wood).
