have you ever paid for parking at a hotel?

i swear ive stayed in at least 50 hotels in my life in many different cities all over the country and never had to pay for parking in their own lot, until this past weekend. this hotel (which was pretty nice btw) basically forced you to take their valet parking service and charged a nightly fee. wtf? and i couldnt say no since i needed to park my car!

am i wrong in being surprised here? or is this normal? have you guys been to a hotel that charges for parking?

In my experience it seems pretty standard - especially for hotels in decent-sized cities where parking is a premium. In my cases it's been when the parking is in a multi-level garage. Never for lot parking, though.

Ain't saying it's right, but I think it's more common than you want to think. If you drive there, they gotcha...

yes, i've had to pay. I had to pay something like $15 a night for self parking at a hotel once. the best thing to do is to check beforehand, i always do now. they'll usually say on their website.

Welcome to the big city. $15/night for parking is cheap in some areas.

Yep. I think the least I've paid is $20, and as high as $50.

Many many times. More common in larger cities.

Yes, only in hotels located in a downtown area and usually more upscale hotels.

Usually they will just add it to your room and give you a ticket so you can get in and out of the garage without paying each time you come and go.

Only in Alexandria, VA, but I don't stay in hotels in big cities as a general rule.

Same as everyone else. In downtown areas of good-size cities, I've paid before. What I've noticed is that the spaces in these garages are as tiny as they come too. Sure, it's obvious they want to squeeze as many spots into the garage as possible. It irks me though since it seems as if I'm paying for the spot, I should at least be entitled to enough room to open my door all the way.

Yes. Big cities hate people having money, so they take it.

^ It's true. Also, the fancier (more expensive) a hotel is, the more they charge you for stuff that you can get free at a $49/night Motel 6. They nickel and dime you for absolutely everything at swanky hotels.

Re: have you ever paid for parking at a hotel?

Recent stays for my family:

Chicago (March)
Marriott Residence Inn - Downtown/Magnificent Mile
$45/night

Toronto (Last July)
Courtyard by Marriott - Downtown
C$30/night

Both of these properties are **RIGHT** downtown (the Chicago Marriott is 1 block from the Hancock Tower and Michigan Avenue, the Toronto one was in the 400 block of Yonge Street). Paying to park is a necessary evil. However, I note that properties in Lansing, Zanesville, and Joplin have never charged us to park there.

I think I usually pay if I'm staying in New York, LA or Chicago. Other than those cities, I usually try to get a hotel outside the downtown area and don't think I've ever had to pay.

Re: have you ever paid for parking at a hotel?

Stayed in downtown Boston (financial district) a few months ago and it was ~$30 to park and I think that was after a discount. The worse part is that the parking lot/garage wasn't even onsite. It was a good 5 minute walk back to the hotel lobby.

Five minutes might not seem too bad but when it's the middle of January, freezing rain, and having to make multiple trips to carry your luggage, it's kind of a pain.

i think it depends on the area (whether it's near downtown or a stadium/convention center, etc.)

I've stayed at a hotel at retailed over $200 a night, and wasn't charged parking. i've stayed at a hotel that retailed around $100 a night that did charge parking.

$20/night in New Orleans and no in-and-out. That was my most recent.

Re: have you ever paid for parking at a hotel?

I pay for parking all the time but when in a big city I always stay in a 4* hotel. The most expensive one was the New Orleans Marriott which was $35.00 per day.

I don't mind paying for parking when you can Priceline a 4* hotel for $45.00 a night.

It is normal, not all hotels charge for parking, but many do. I've stayed in hotels that did not have their own parking garage.

Re: have you ever paid for parking at a hotel?

I get nailed all the time.

Philly, Boston, NYC all are $35 -$40 a DAY

so if you stay a weekend you get banged $70-80. All have in-out privileges, but you have to tip the attendant etc.

These are at places like the Lowes, Fairmont, Hyatt. all $$$$$$

But when I stay at a Hilton Garden Inn or Holiday Inn - parking is free and for the price of one night at the swanky places I can stay 2 nights, get a fridge in my room, and sometimes a microwave.

Parking...is the limo driver's problem.

The turns inside the parking garage are a bitch.
