Microsoft offers reward for missing Xbox gamer

By Michel Comte, AFP

US software behemoth Microsoft has doubled a cash reward for information on the whereabouts of a Canadian boy who ran away from home after his father took away his Xbox game console, it said Tuesday.

Brandon Crisp, 15, took off on his bicycle from his Barrie, Ontario home on October 13 -- Canada's Thanksgiving holiday -- and rode east along an old rail line.

He has not been seen since.

His father told local media he had removed Brandon's Xbox, built by Microsoft, after noticing changes in behavior since Brandon started playing "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" online.

The boy started skipping school, stealing money and ignoring his studies, his father said.

A local newspaper, the family's Internet service provider and Child Find offered a 25,000-dollar (19,500-dollar US) reward for information leading to his return.

Microsoft topped it up with another 25,000 dollars, the company said Tuesday in an email to AFP, "hoping for his swift return."

"Like everyone, we are deeply worried about the disappearance of Brandon Crisp," the company said.

Exhaustive searches have not turned up a single clue beyond the boy's bicycle, found last week with a flat tire.

Police are said to be examining who Brandon played with online. "Law enforcement has contacted Microsoft about this matter and we are cooperating fully with them," said Microsoft.

On Sunday, 1,600 volunteer searchers packed up their reflective vests and ended their efforts to find him, while police stopped their air and water search.

In an interview with the daily Globe and Mail, the boy's father, Steve Crisp, said he had not known how important the gaming system was to his son and how he would react when it was taken away

Experts commented that gamers may form bonds with fellow online players.

"This had become his identity, and I didn't realize how in-depth this was until I took his Xbox away," Steve Crisp told the Globe and Mail. "That's like cutting his legs off."

"This is such an issue that hits every parent out there, with video games that are starting to control our kids' lives," he said.

"I just took away his identity, so I can understand why he got so mad and took off. Before, I couldn't understand why he was taking off for taking his game away."

Now, Brandon's father says he just wants his son to come home.

Ok, so the kid gets his xbox taken away, and he basically throws a temper tantrum, and runs away. He should not be getting rewards offered for him just because it was an xbox. He is not more important than the other 5 thousand or so kids that go missing weekly.

What kind of achievments do you get from finding the boy? If it's only a few points then why bother.

He's 15, by then he should know better honestly.

I didn't say that they shouldn't find him, or they should punish him. All I said was that they shouldn't be putting so much emphasis on finding HIM.

There are thousands of kids that go missing every day that should be getting the press, ones that didn't do it for some stupid material reason.

I do admit I worded that wrong. I reworded it. It just pisses me off when companies turn a blind eye to the situation until they can get some kind of advertising out of it by helping. I didn't see them jumping to help other missing kids.

Sad thing is, they would probably find him quicker if they offered that achievement instead of 25k lol

He <s>was</s> is 15 years old, which I consider a young adult and he ran away for a reason that really doesn't matter in life. Now, if he was abused, then he would have a valid reason to run away.

But, the parents only have themselves to blame. They didn't regulate his video game playing, so he played full time and his grades degraded and he became belligerent. When they tried to rein him in, he decided that he would be better off without his parents.

He got himself into whatever mess he is in now, but as it has been said, he is probably at a friends house too afraid to go home now.

Chris

'America's Most Wanted' takes on Crisp case
Updated: Thu Oct. 30 2008 1:34:15 PM

ctvtoronto.ca

Police are taking their search for a missing Barrie, Ont. boy south of the border, enlisting the help of a popular crime TV show.

Brandon Crisp, 15, is seen in this undated police handout photo.

"America's Most Wanted" is now featuring the case of 15-year-old Brandon Crisp on their website. Officials at the show say they are monitoring the case and might feature it on their show if police believe the avid gamer might have made his way to the U.S.

Crisp went missing on Oct. 13, Thanksgiving Day, after getting into a fight with his parents over his incessant video-game playing.

The boy left home on his bike and hasn't been seen since. His bike has since been recovered.

Police in Barrie say they are not ruling anything out and are investigating whether Crisp ventured into the U.S. to meet with people he met over the Internet, many of them American residents. His parents fear he might have possibly been taken against his will.

Meanwhile, friends, family and strangers who have been touched by the story gathered in Shanty Bay Wednesday night for a candlelight vigil and prayers. The vigil was organized through a Facebook group set up in honour of Brandon.

"We need to make Brandon aware that the light is there, there's a light of hope for him, and that we're lighting the way for him to find his way home," said Nancy Dickey, a Facebook group member.

Although police have ended their official ground search for the missing teen, the Ontario Provincial Police' cyber=crime unit is taking a look at Crisp's computer, his Xbox, text messages and emails for clues.
This kid had better hope he is being held against his will.

Or what? In his mind the worst thing that could be done has already happened.
