Sex Education in 5th Grade?!

So, I scoop the 11 yr. old from daycare the other day and he says to me, "Today, I learned what an erection is" and then "also, we learned what a nocturnal emission is".

My jaw drops and I start asking and he says they watched a video at school about this stuff and the high school kids (on the video) say its better to know what is going on first, rather than be scared/surprised. Then, he goes on to say that the video says, you have a nocturnal emission when you have a sexy dream and proceeds to ask me what "sexy dream" is. Also, he said the video explained what it is, so the kids didn't think they peed their pants.

Anyway, so we have a little talk and I try to answer most of his questions, but it just seemed a bit early to me and a bit awkward because he seems so young to me. Are they really starting sex ed. in 5th grade? Is this happening in most elementary schools? I can't remember having anything formal for sex ed. until high school Health class. I assume, they are doing it because everything is getting younger now, middle school-aged kids getting pregnant, etc?

Just wanted to share, discuss.

Don't they require parental permission for teaching this stuff? Why did you not know?

Mine started in 5th grade, too.
There was a parental consent form.
Good times.

I don't have any kids myself...but I am not sure I see a problem. Kids are having sex at a much younger age now and they are generally confused about it.

Also, maybe this should be taken into account. The people teaching (not all, but some) are part of my generation (23-28) and we all had early exposure (no pun intended) to this. But more importantly, I think it is great that you (as awkward as it may be) are willing to openly discuss/explain it with your kid. I wish my dad did at that age.

Surely, there's at least one class period devoted to "cooties", right?

That's what I'm wondering...

It was 6th grade for me back in '87-'88. Parents definitely had to sign a permission form.

I don't recall that for me (that would have been about 1993-1995 area). I never understood what the problem was, and I can understand the religious side of it, but come on public schools...leave religion out of it. But I guess if enough parents were concerned then getting permission is cool.

Son't remember a parental consent form, but I think that is when we first had it.

I thought boobies were awesome back then, so it seems like a good time to start the education of how great boobies are.

I went to a non-religious private school and mine was I believe in the 4th or 5th grade.

You should be teaching your kids about this, not the school. I hope they knew about sex before they saw the video.

Mine was in fifth grade, too, and that was in the 90s. I don't remember if there was a permission slip needed, or not.

Another thought: even though many of these boys aren't near puberty at all, many of the girls in their grade are. To me, that means: 1. the girls need to know what's going on, 2. equal education helps everyone, and 3. even if the girls have already begun puberty, at least the guys will know what's going on before their stuff happens so they can be ready.

It is 5th grade around here. There is a parental consent to be signed and you can view the film ahead of time if you choose. It isn't a bad thing for kids to be aware of what is going on with their bodies and while you may be comfortable talking to your child about it, not every parent is. I would much rather have a kid be reassured that these things are normal than think there is something really wrong with them and be too afraid to ask about it.

5th grade here too, and yes you needed a consent form. Let's see if I can place 5th grade for me. I believe it was 1988-1989.

The earlier the better if you ask me. Or else you'll end up like this guy:

I had the whole sex/sexual health class in 5th grade too, with letters being sent home if parents didn't want their children to learn about personal hygeine products.

5th grade during the 70's and we had to have a parental consent form signed also.
