School me about photo hosting sites...

Throwing this out to the vast (and shallow) knowledge base of the Otter community:

I've got several hundred photos from two recent vacations that I'd like to share with friends and family on the cheap <free>. Uploading them to a hosting site seems the logical choice, but I've never done it before and I have a couple stipulations.

First, although I think this would be nearly universal anyway, I'd like viewing and downloading to be free for the end-user; ordering physical prints directly from the site (a la Snapfish) for a minimal fee would be a big plus.

Second, and this is the kicker, I would like the photo file/album/database to be accessible by invite (password) only and not have any photos accessible to the public by keyword search, random search, recent upload search, etc. My wife has used Snapfish in the past but has ascertained that limiting access is probably not possible there.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You only need one site: Flickr.

I use Photobucket and I am happy with it. It is free and simple to use.

I'm in the same boat, looking for a photo hosting site. For years I uploaded them to Imagestation and was happy with their service, but they closed up shop. My pictures were automatically transferred to Shutterfly, but I don't really care for that site. I have a bunch of pictures that I've taken since the switch that I haven't uploaded and am wondering about my options.

The most important thing to me (besides being free) is for the site to provide a direct link to all of my albums, which Imagestation used to do. I like to include such a link in the signature of e-mails that I send to friends and family. It'd be also nice to have to storage space restrictions (again, like Imagestation), but I don't know any place does this.

I've looked at Picasa, but it seems that it only gives you links to individual albums.

Is there any free site that does this?

That's not true. The direct link to all of your albums is picasaweb.google.com/[your Gmail user name].

I've used basically ever hosting site on the web and picasa is by far the best for online sharing albums. The integration with Picasa (which is the best photo organizing app around, IMO), the clean interface, easy emailing pictures, the powerful and non-destructive photo tweaking, easy linking to friend's/family's other galleries, rss feeds, integrated mapping/Google Earth, etc, etc, etc. Add the fact that it's free and it's unbeatable.

Thanks. I'm sold now. Going through Picasa's tutorial, I gathered that only individual albums would display a link. Glad I was wrong.

Looks like I have a weekend project now.
