A 5.2 earthquake hits in West Salem, Ill.

WEST SALEM, Ill. - A 5.4 earthquake that appeared to rival the strongest recorded in the region rocked people awake up to 350 miles away early Friday, surprising residents unaccustomed to such a powerful Midwest temblor.

The quake just before 4:37 a.m. was centered 6 miles from West Salem, Ill., and 66 miles from Evansville, Ind. It was felt in such distant cities as Chicago, Cincinnati and Milwaukee, 350 miles north of the epicenter, but there were no early reports of injuries or significant damage.

"It shook our house where it woke me up," said David Behm of Philo, 10 miles south of Champaign. "Windows were rattling, and you could hear it. The house was shaking inches. For people in central Illinois, this is a big deal. It's not like California."

The quake shook skyscrapers in Chicago's Loop, 240 miles north of the epicenter, and in downtown Indianapolis, about 160 miles northeast of it. Residents of Cincinnati and St. Louis also reported feeling the earth shake.

Irvetta McMurtry of Cincinnati said she felt the rattling for up to 20 seconds.

"All of a sudden, I was awakened by this rumbling shaking," said McMurtry, 43. "My bed is an older wood frame bed, so the bed started to creak and shake, and it was almost like somebody was taking my mattress and moving it back and forth."

Lucas Griswold, a dispatcher in West Salem, said the Edwards County sheriff's department received reports of minor damage and no injuries.

"Oh, yeah, I felt it. It was interesting," Griswold said. "A lot of shaking."

Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Todd Ringle in Evansville said there were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake occurred in the Illinois basin-Ozark dome region that covers parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas and stretches from Indianapolis and St. Louis to Memphis, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The organization's Web site said earthquakes occur irregularly in the area, and that the largest historical earthquake in the region also a magnitude 5.4 caused damage in southern Illinois in 1968.
I live in western KY, and it woke me up, which is saying something. I can sleep through almost anything. At first I thought I was just dreaming, but when I rolled over and the bed was still shaking, and then I heard the window rattling too, I figured it was an earthquake. Kinda eerie at the same time b/c I was just thinking we hadn't had a small earthquake in awhile, since about 5 years ago we were getting small ones every so often.

UPDATE- News just reported it's been downsized a bit to a 5.2.

I live in Salem, Illinois (not West Salem) and it woke us up as well.

Unfortunately, Oprah's condition is unknown at this time.

I didn't realize there was a fault in the midwest.

I sure hope Oprah's okay.

Ok guys, well I'm going to completely hide out now. There was just a woman on the news from an animal shelter that said all the dogs started howling and such, which is usual before an earthquake. But she said a cockatiel started asking 'What are we doing? Where are we going?' a minute before the earthquake hit.

Fucking creepy.

Meanwhile, hundreds of cockatiels who were quiet didn't make the news.

I live in Terre Haute, Indiana, and the earthquake woke me up. I live in a four story apartment building, and it shook the whole building. First time I ever felt the building shake like that.

I slept through the earthquake.

It did wake my wife, who for some reason thought I was having a seizure.

My alarm goes off at 4:30. I hit the snooze button but 5 minutes later the bed started mildly shaking. It didn't stop for a few seconds and in my sleepy haze I thought one of my kids had crawled into bed with us. I sat bolt upright and said "stop shaking the bed" only to realize there were no kids present. Chaulking it up to sleepiness, I got out of bed, went downstairs and made coffee.

Driving in, I heard about the earthquake on the radio.

Felt it here in northern IL, but didn't know what it was until I got to work and heard people talking about it. Just knew "something" woke me up 3 minutes prior to my alarm, damnit.

North-side Chicago, I was half awake at that time, but made no notice of anything (on the second floor of a two-flat). Fully woke up about an hour later and saw it on the news.

I'm a little disappointed I was too groggy to feel anything. But maybe that's what stirred me...

Oprah caused it. She dropped her bank book.

You see, she's very rich.
