So I drove into a tree today....

The time was 5:50 am. I was commuting to work and it was extremely windy out. I was driving 35 mph when all of the sudden branches and a tree fell into the road right in front of me. I hit my brakes but there wasn't enough time so I smashed into this 30 foot monstrosity that covered the whole road. My front end went up and smashed down with the rest of my car winding up sideways on the damned tree (as in not touching the road).

I wasn't injured and no one else was involved. To make a long story short my front tires are "attached" to the car but as the tow truck driver showed the cop and I, my suspension has been ripped off almost completely and it sounded like my transmission was shot when switching gears (god knows what else is going on under there).

I still have to wait for the appraisal and to talk to the insurance company, get a rental, and all but I'm wondering how screwed I am. I just finished paying off the car (2003 Saturn Ion) and it only had 68,000 miles on it. If the suspension, bumper, transmission, and under carriage are shot do you guys think they'll total it? The sad part is that aside from the damage under the front end the rest of the car is in immaculate condition.

Fun day!

-Todd

from the size of the tree you describe.. just be glad you hit it, instead of it hitting you

Yeah... that's what was going through my head after I collected myself. If I had been 1 or 2 seconds later that tree would have landed on my car. Gave me the creeps when I thought about it!

and if you had been 5-10 seconds faster, you may have made it past before the tree hit the road.. making it the problem of the person behind you

so the lesson learned here is
drive much faster if you want to avoid accidents

That's the amusing thing. There isn't a bloody dent on the car!

I defended a case once where a 60 foot oak tree fell on a woman's car in high winds and turned her into a quadriplegic. Count your blessings, Dragon Fly. The car can be replaced.

Did you get an acquittal for the tree?

I bet the tree is in knots about the damage it caused.

It may not know the extent until it brushes up on the police report.
