PETA Opposes Tribute to Fried Chicken

PETA Opposes Tribute to Fried Chicken

Associated Press
February 09, 2008 7:02 AM EST

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Animals rights advocates are squawking at a measure that would make fried chicken Kentucky's official picnic food.

State Rep. Charles Siler is sponsoring legislation to assign the designation to KFC's "finger lickin' good" chicken, first served by Colonel Harland Sanders in 1940.

The late colonel's fried chicken deserves the title because of the worldwide attention and economic benefit it has brought to the state, Siler said. KFC, a subsidiary of Louisville-based Yum Brands Inc., has 11,000 restaurants in more than 80 countries.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals bristles at the idea. The animal rights group claims that the chickens KFC serves are abused, even tortured.

"If the state legislature moves forward with this one, then they should change Kentucky's state bird from the cardinal to the debeaked, crippled, scalded, diseased, dead chicken," said Bruce Friedrich, PETA vice president.

PETA has been involved in a long-standing battle with KFC, and even began a push two years ago to have a bust of the bespectacled Colonel Sanders removed from the Kentucky Capitol. Sanders, with his white goatee and black string tie, became recognizable worldwide by marketing his fried chicken.

PETA complains about anything people do that involves animals.

But, only animals with a little appeal. You don't hear them complaining about snails being roasted alive.

I couldn't eat at KFC (cause thats even real chicken is it? Aren't they not even allowed to use the word "'chicken" on the menu or something like that) but when shit like this happens it makes me wanna watch that Penn & Teller: Bullshit episode about PETA. Pretty interesting stuff.

It's real chicken. I believe the reason for going with "KFC" is that they wanted to deemphasize the 'fried' aspect of their menu.

The PETA P&T episode was quite good. I generally take the Michael Wilbon view on PETA.

I had heard that too. But I just recently saw a new KFC go up and they used "Kentucky Fried Chicken" on the sign. I remember because I was so surprised to see it. I wonder if they are going to start using the full name again.

Oh, can PETA and sit on this and spin.

Son of a gun - I'm watching the Maryland/NCSt game and a KFC commercial just came on and on the bucket used in the ad, "Kentucky Fried Chicken" is actually spelled out. So maybe they are going old school.

But are they allowed to use the word chicken on the menu at the drive-thru/in store ?
I thought they could say things like (example) "3-piece leg meal" and not "3-piece chicken leg meal" or something along these lines.

Why on earth wouldn't they be allowed to use the word chicken?

It's been hard not to notice some of the things you've said lately.

Anyway, this is just PETA being PETA. By this point, there's little they could do that could shock me. I think I finally reached that point when they started the ads equating the treatment of animals to the Holocaust.

Would you guys be up for getting cow suits and flying out to PETA headquarters and staging a protest. Something to the effect of Cows Want To Be Eaten.

We can say we've talked to cows and they told us they were honored to be our food source.

By "KFC", we're talking about Korean Fried Chicken, right?

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/07/di...rssnyt&emc=rss

Or is that Korean Fried Canis?

Popeyes > KFC

Luckily, KFC incurs all the wrath.
