Re-charging your Car Air conditioner?
I was in a K-mart three weeks ago and they had a big display of re-charger kits for your vehicle AC. Has anyone done this? My vehicle is technically 8 years old and the AC still works but dont know if I should mess with it or have it done by the dealer or just leave it alone since it still works.

I keep wondering if it will quit some day. But until then, I won't worry about it. I'll probably have a new car before it goes anyway - or maybe a horse, what with gas prices and all.

You need a chiltons or simliar manual for your car and an infrared thermometer
The manual will have instructions as to how long to run the AC and at what RPM and then take a temperature read at the vent to see if it is OK.
If you pass the vent temp test, no need to mess with it. It is simple to check.
There is a fill valve (again the manual will show you where), it really is as simple as connect the refill can and it fills itself.

Unless you have a leak or had AC work done, there is NO reason to recharge your AC system. It's a closed (sealed) system.
It's not a maintenance item like changing your oil at specific intervals.
Also, you don't need an infrared thermometer to measure the vent temp. A standard pocket thermometer will work just fine.
