Please help solve a workplace coffee dilemma

OK a fresh pot of coffee is brewing. Person A wants to put their cup under the fresh stream of coffee coming out of the coffeemaker. Person B says that this makes the whole pot weaker and ruins it for everyone else. Person A says its the same as waiting for it to fill the pot then pour.

Who is right?

Edited for clarity. I posted in a rush to get the poll in.

Person B is right. If they do it right at the beginning of the brew it will make the pot weaker. If they do it at the end of the brew it will make the pot stronger. Don't mess with the brew cycle.

I don't think it matters. Maybe later when all the patients go to bed, we will try some experiments.

Lol, I'm a type "A" coffee guy myself. I only do this when nobody is watching because it really does effect the rest of the brew. I think most if not all of my coworkers probably don't even notice or even care but I don't want to come up against the coffee nazi just in-case.

I just prefer stronger coffee! So I'll be the asshat, no problem.

Person B is right. There's even a sign up in our breakroom telling you not to do this.

Want stronger coffee than what's brewed in the break room? Bring in your own coffee maker.

I've always been told to capture it mid-stream to avoid contamination.

If there were some sort of stirring mechanism in the pot, I'd agree with this. As it is, I imagine the degree of alteration to the pot is imperceptible under normal circumstances.

Besides, I dump a load of sweetener and cream into my coffee, so who the hell knows what it's really supposed to taste like.

Well, a sign in some breakroom is the only proof I need.

Well to you and I there would be no difference. To the coffee nazi's that it sounds like he works with there might be a percievable difference.

I'd like to put them through a blind taste test.

Does anyone who does not see someone do this, later come in and taste the coffee and say, "Bah! Atrocious! Someone must have taken a cup from the stream during the brewing cycle!!!"

Really, most of the outrage is more of a "who does he think he is?" nature rather than a "OMG you dilluted the pot!" variety.

Person B. Though if it only happens on rare occasions, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

If it makes that much difference, if you're that picky, (if you're "B"), then you should brew your own coffee and not drink office coffee. at the guys complaining.

This happens at work? Who cares about the friggin type of coffee at work? You know it's not going to be great or at 'your' standards. The person bitching should just make their own coffee (french press is the best/easy way). Stronger/Weaker/Darker/Lighter kids stuff you guys are arguing about.

Next we are going to have an argument of sodas/candy stocked in a
vending machine at work
