CNN sounding a lot like the Naked Gun

CNN live from ladies' room: Anchor leaves mike on
Unaware that her wireless microphone was "live" during her break, she could be heard overriding Bush's prepared address on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK - Kyra Phillips, anchor of CNN's "Live From...," unwittingly upstaged President Bush's speech in New Orleans with on-the-air analysis of her husband and the marriage of her brother -- all live from a CNN ladies room.

Unaware that her wireless microphone was "live" during her break, Phillips could be heard overriding Bush's prepared address Tuesday as he was seen marking the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

The Atlanta-based Phillips, in conversation with an unidentified woman in an echoey room, dismissed most men with a vulgar term, but called herself "very lucky in that regard. My husband is handsome and he is genuinely a loving _ you know, no ego _ you know what I'm saying? Just a really passionate, compassionate, great, great human being. And they exist. They do exist. They're hard to find. Yup. But they are out there."

A few moments later, she observed that "brothers have to be, you know, protective. Except for mine. I've got to be protective of him."

Why? "His wife is just a control freak."

At that point, another voice cut in: "Kyra."

"Yeah, baby?" replied Phillips on hearing her name.

"Your mike is on. Turn it off. It's been on the air."

CNN anchor Daryn Kagan, looking flustered, then broke into the telecast with a recap of what Bush had been saying.

Phillips later apologized to viewers "for an issue we had with our mikes" and "for a little bit of an interruption there during the president."

CNN issued its own official apology "to our viewers and the president for the disruption," and apologized to the White House.

In a subsequent statement, CNN explained the mishap as "a technical malfunction with the audio board. We're addressing how this happened and why it was not more promptly corrected on air."

Isn't this what happens in Anna Quindlen's new book?

Weird.

"...but his wife is a control FREAK..."

I'll bet that'll be fun to deal with.

I feel bad for Kyra... she's a sweet person (although it is pretty damn funny). Word is the audio person didn't have the mic tracked. Some other malfunction, but who knows?

No kidding. The next family gathering should be interesting. Maybe CNN can cover it.

I've always joked at work that a popular network would be the "Preview" or "Preset" channel. That would be what you see in the monitor that is about to be taken to air. We've got a couple of anchors that like to dance in their seat during some of the music opens and they stop the second before coming out on air. Lots of silly stuff going on just before it hits.

The only thing better would have been farts and wet, plopping noises.

No kidding - that would be great. Was there not a film (or whatever) that
had footage of, if I remember correctly, Clinton and others just before they went on air? I'd like to search Youtube for those.

I'd like to see that sometime.

I like the clip that's been around of George W Bush casually cleaning his glasses with the back of a woman's clothing like she was just a towel hanging on a wall.

"Alright, this is the one year anniversary of Katrina making landshore there in New Orleans..."

Obviously a tense moment at the anchor desk.

When she finishes talking and gets yelled at for having her mike on, the audience break into applause.

I'm confused... did this just appear on CNN's broadcast or did this actually go over the sound system to the whole press room?

Many years ago I was flipping channels and saw Bernie (now-retired black anchor on CNN - I'm blanking on his last name) sitting at his anchor desk, casually smoking, waiting to come back from commercial break. The channel was NOT CNN, so somebody at my local cable office somehow let that thru on this other channel. Or something. Not sure how that works.

It was mildly amusing. I always liked Bernie.

The mishap had happened Tuesday when Phillips, still wearing her wireless microphone, visited the loo while CNN aired President Bush's speech from New Orleans. For a minute or so her voice commingled with his, as she was heard telling an unidentified woman how great her husband is, then mentioned that her sister-in-law is "a control freak." Only then was she alerted that her mike was live.
I thought she said 'his wife is a control freak' in the audio clip. Perhaps they're trying to cover up the affair?
