I can't find my passport

What's the deal. Should I report this if I don't find it today? Is it like losing a credit card as far as ID theft goes?

I'm worried about someone going somewhere and then it's on the record that I'm there.

I'll keep looking. Time to clean up around here anyway.

No. To some extent it's worse. With a credit card, you're liable for around $50 once you report it being lost. With a passport and enough information, they probably can then apply for a credit card (and more) - assuming it falls into the hands of someone who's good at that sort of ID theft.

Probably best to report it if you can't find it within a reasonable period of time. Also means that the passport office can arrange to get you a new one that much sooner.

If you are in your house and you know its somewhere, why report it? Unless you think someone broke into your house and took it, its not lost the same way it might be if you were on vacation and couldn't find it.

You indeed don't want to lose it. Find it if you can - report it if it is truly gone (vs just buried in a drawer).

A passport is as 'big' for ID purposes as a driver's license. Maybe bigger.
