Bomb squad checks suspicious package outside White House

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Police sealed off the front gates of the White House and a bomb squad was called in on Wednesday to check on what on officials said was a suspicious package left outside.

President George W. Bush was not in the White House at the time, as heavily armed guards took up position on the front lawn and several police cars and a bomb squad van converged on the area.

"We have a suspicious package along the north fenceline of the White House. We are carrying out our normal security protocols," said Tom Mazur, spokesman for the
Secret Service.

Police cleared Lafayette Park across the street from the White House and confirmed it was a suspicious package.

Members of a bomb squad were investigating and a small remote-control robot was near what appeared to be a small white package.

Reporters and camera crews were ordered inside the White House press room and could only monitor the situation by peering through the windows.

I dont wish that it blows up, i dont wish anyone gets hurt, I do wish it is a bomb because they usually arent.

Why, just 'cause you're bored?

A bomb outside the White House, injuries or not, would not be a good thing.

Sounds like standard procedure, most likely (and hopefully) not a bomb.

So you want to live in a world where people place explosive devices in public areas that have the potential to take human life? Sorry dude, that's pretty fucked up.

How is it better than finding out that it is benign?

Dubya sent away for the Charles Atlas Bodybuilding Kit, since he's tired of Osama Bin Laden kicking sand in his face.

I am from NY as well. There comes a point where you learn to laugh at things.

Rape is sensitive, yet I have laughed at rape jokes.
Religion is sensitive, yet I laugh at religious jokes.
Lacy Peterson is sensitive, yet I laugh at San Francisco Bay Row Boat jokes.

Well, if you find rape, religion and Lacy Peterson funny, then we're all jerks for not finding your terrorism "joke" very funny.

Make whatever comment you want to, but don't be shocked if sometimes you get a negative reaction. Just because you have one set of standards doesn't make it the official policy for the world. It seems you are unaware of that based on your post.

I wasn't implying you can't make light of sensitive topics. Just don't act bewildered when you get negative responses.

Christopher made a terrorism joke on the Sopranos on Sunday. I thought it was funny.

Someone today said that when back to back homers are hit at a Giants game into the San Francisco Bay they will call it a Scott Peterson.

While terrorism and what happened to Lacy Peterson arent funny, I got a laugh at both.

Okay, let's not take this too far. It was obviously a comment made in jest... no harm done, SoSpacey.

I'll look for an update on this story.

It was not a bomb.

Man held for tossing harmless package at White House

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A man was taken into custody on Wednesday after throwing over the White House fence an object that triggered a bomb investigation, but no explosives were found.

Police had sealed off the front gates of the White House and cleared Lafayette Park across from the executive mansion as a bomb squad converged on the area to investigate the object.

President George W. Bush was not at the White House at the time and the grounds were not evacuated.

The package, thrown over the fence on the White House's north side, was found to be harmless, said Tom Mazur, spokesman for the
Secret Service.

"That package has been rendered safe," he said.

Authorities sent a small remote-controlled robot onto the White House grounds to check out what appeared to be a small white package. The robot picked up the object and brought it back to the driveway.

Reporters and camera crews were ordered inside the White House press room and could only monitor the situation by peering through the windows.

Police later approached a man in Lafayette Park and put him in a car with handcuffs.

"An individual threw the suspicious package over the north fence line. He is in custody," Mazur said.

Mazur said a similar incident had occurred before involving the same man. Even though past incidents had not involved explosives, officials proceeded with bomb-investigating procedures as a precaution.

Bush had just left by helicopter from the White House south lawn, heading off on a trip to West Virginia, when the package was spotted.
