US Navy kills one, wounds five suspected pirates off Somalia

Either pirates suck, or these guys suck as pirates.

I would suggest challenging a guided missile cruiser and guided missile destroyer with an RPG is a bad career move.

US Navy kills, wounds suspected pirates off Somalia 2 hours, 56 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two U.S. Navy ships returned fire on Saturday on a group of suspected pirates off the coast of Somalia, killing one and wounding five, Navy officials said.

The incident occurred in the Indian Ocean about 25 miles

off the coast of Somalia as the USS Cape St. George, a guided missile cruiser, and the USS Gonzalez, a guided missile destroyer, conducted maritime security operations.

A vessel was seen towing two smaller skiffs, the officials said. As boarding teams prepared to conduct a routine boarding, the Navy ships noticed the suspected pirates brandished what appeared to be rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

The suspected pirates then opened fire on the Navy ships. The two ships returned fire with small arms, the officials said.

One suspected pirate was killed and a fire ignited aboard the main vessel. The boarding teams took 12 other suspects, including the five who were injured, into custody, they said.

The boarding teams also confiscated a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and automatic weapons, the officials said.

No U.S. sailors were wounded in the incident.

Somalia's waters have become among the most dangerous in the world since warlords ousted military dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991. Typically, armed pirates use speedboats to attack and board ships, including oil tankers.

Yeah, they suck as pirates. They need to get their Worldwide Association of Pirates (W.A.P) membership revoked.

Putting the word "Somalian" before any other noun or group of nouns, results in fits of laughter and extreme stomach pains.

Hey those pirates set their sights a bit too high that's all.

They get points for being ambitious.

You could say Navy SEALS are similar to ninjas. No wonder the Pirates got their ass handed to them.

I'm sure they have davits for lowering boats, and those boats weigh more than pirates. Should handle the load.

Or, one could wish the Phalanx (autonomous Gatling gun) had engaged the RPG and then the pirate vessel as a threat to the ship.

Unfortunately, it cannot be used against a ship. It only defends again fast, incoming threats (missiles, jets). But, if it could, it would absolutely shred another ship.

An amusing anecdote: Phalanx is part of the CIWS ("c-whiz") which stands for Close-In Weapon System. Those of us who worked in Combat Systems had our own affectionate acronym definition for it: Christ It Won't Shoot

It always did have problems, especially multiple inbounds (in simulation)

So now the real question is: who would win between the crappy "I got killed trying to rob a guy" ninja and the crappy "I got killed by the navy" pirate?

Obviously the Crappy Pirate with his RPG would defeat the Crappy Ninja with his "looks sorta like a real pistol" BB gun.

See? The rule holds true.

Actually, didn't the Block 1B upgrade allow for targetting of slow or stationary low altitude hovering aircraft (ie. helicopters) as well as slow or even stationary surface craft?

They should have invoked the Code and called for "parlay".
