143 Days Without Rain - Phoenix Record-Breaking Drought OVER

It's raining! A much-needed relentless drizzle here in Phoenix... and it's good. We've seen 143 days without rain - which is a record for us. The previous record of consecutive days without rain was 101 days set about 6 years ago.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11653661/from/RSS/

While this means absolutely nothing to most of you - those who live in Phoenix or know someone who does might appreciate this and can rejoice this day along with me.

I almost posted this thread. Several DVDTalk members from Chicago are in town for spring training and were planning to go to the Grand Canyon today. The roads are all closed because of the snow.

No matter how much it rains, though, this summer's wildfire season is going to be out of control. Probably the worst we've had in a few decades.

I thought it was the other way around... lots of rain makes lots of plants to dry up in the summer and catch fire.

No. Rain here all over in AZ = snow. That's what prevents the big wildfires up north. Because when the snow melts, it runs off through the forests. That allows the trees to get the water they need. That, then, allows them to create sap which fights off bark beetles. That's one of the big reasons why we've had so many bad years lately. Those stupid grass and brush ones that happen on the outskirts of town are not nearly as threatening as the big ones.

I know, when it finally rains around here, everyone will take the day off and go run around in it.

We got teased by some snow clouds yesterday. They dropped a little dusting on the mountain tops, not enough to amount to anything, and then left.

It's rained here all day. There's snow in Cave Creek and Black Canyon City if anyone knows the area. That's only like 30 mins. outside of downtown Phoenix.

Some places have got about an inch of rain, while the outlying places like my town and Queen Creek are logging about 2".

I'm spending the weekend down at my mom's place in Gilbert and it's been pouring pretty hard all day.

On the news they just said that parts of Cave Creek have over a foot of snow and it's not supposed to stop snowing until late tonight or early into the morning. That's crazy.

Upstate here, we've gotten probably 4-6 inches of snow...and it's still snowing. It's difficult to measure it, it's not like NY snow. It was coming down so hard it was solid white. It's even worse than the blizzard of 96 back East.

We got about 3 inches!

It won't affect the fire danger, but it sure is pretty!
