Apothecary Table / Decorating Question...

I have an apothecary coffee table similar to this sitting in front of my couch:

Are the drawers supposed to face the couch or face out into the room?

Depends on when you are most likely to want to use them.

If your TV remotes and prophylactics are in there, you want the drawers to face the couch.

Towards the couch. Don't know why, that's just what I would expect.

Well, I recommend you keep hearty doses of castor oil, medicinal whisky, quinine for malaria, hartshorn, citric acid for scurvy, opium, laudanum, morphine, calomel, and tincture of camphor. I have heard of some of the works of France's notable chemicist, Louis Pasteur, working with some of the more advanced medicine's of to-day's time. I also recomend storing Ipecac, althouh Wild Jalap will do in a pinch. Keep in stock Dr. Moffett's Teethina for any teething problems, as well as Agnew's Powder for head-ach, and Watkins Anodyne. I also recommend Bayer pharmaceutical products. They provide a substance called "heroin" which can be used as a sedative for coughs, as well as aspirin and lycetol. These are all great things to stock if you are to run your own apothecary and be a well-known chemist or druggist.

Another vote for towards the couch. That's a cool looking table.

Here's the response I got from an "Ask the Designer" web site:

Thank you for your e-mail.

The drawers should face away from the sofa. This gives a nice presentation of the design detailing when you approch the sofa. Please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions.

Doreen.

Oh, what the hell does she know?

I guess it all comes down to if you personally consider the drawers to be functional or decorative. Base the table's position on that.

I would say it depends on how you approach the couch usually. If the couch facing the entrance to the room, then doreen is right. if you walk into the room facing the back of the couch, then face it toward the entrance to the room (facing the couch).

It also depends on functionality vs appearance for you? is the rest of the room kept in show appearance? do you plan to keep stuff in there you would use while seated on the couch? whats more important to you?

Bump.

Why can't they make one with drawers on both sides? The visual side of me says the designer is right--have the drawers facing out. The lazy ass side of me says to have the drawers facing you.

And I agree, that is a very cool table. It would look great in front of a distressed leather sofa.
