Uvula talk: does it make you puke?

My son said that if you touch that funny thing in your mouth it makes you throw up. I asked where he heard that and he indicated Mrs. Pusser.

So I asked and she yes, if you put your fingers in the back of your mouth and hit the uvula that causes the gag reflex and makes you puke.

Anyone heard that before?

I don't have a uvula so I can't test it on myself.

It's the esophagus itself you have to touch, the uvula just happens to be in the way.

You don't have one?

Touching it doesn't make me puke. Seeing someone who still have tonsils does. Actually, seeing them doesn't, but seeing big tonsils is just ick.

Let me guess, you had it removed to relieve snoring issues?

I don't have any tonsils; they got taken out when I was 16.

Then don't look down my throat. Mine are huge. When I'm back in money, or have insurance, I'll be getting mine taken out. Any time I get sick, they swell up and make it hard to swallow.

And, yes, this post is "fixed" ready, for your convenience.

I can touch my uvula with my tongue. It doesn't make me puke or gag... it just feels weird.

I have a really long tongue though. I can stick it up one of my nostrils to make it look like I'm picking it with my tongue. It freaks people out.

I'm filled with all sorts of little surprises like that.

Oh, and before anyone else gets the bright idea to do this:

My finger is still wet and spit covered... (Thanks to Buford. )

Now I don't do that "sibling torture" stuff very well, so I will politely ask:

Would anyone enjoy a wet willie?

I can and do the same thing, it got me though High School.

I would love to share stories about me and my uvula but it has been infected for the last couple months and it is really starting to suck.

No-mine was taken out.

I also think tonsils look kinda strange-almost pornographic.

I also had those taken out.

Thank you. I saw a program about that kind of surgery on the Discovery Channel once, I guess it just stuck with me.

Did it help you? My husband has snoring issues but his are due to sleep apnea (sp?).

Yes. I also had a case of sleep apnea and snored loudly. I no longer snore unless I'm on my back.

I thought this was going to be a thread about an exciting new web forum for Ear, Nose and Throat doctors.

Color me disappointed.

That's why it's lasted as long as it has. I would have gotten a gold one, but my family was too poor . . .
