Should I buy this?

It's a computer but the question is not computer related. There's a $900 computer that someone has in a pawn shop and they posted in a local bulletin board that they're letting it go for $475 - $300 for the Pawn Shop, $175 for them. We pick it up together and then he gets the $175 and is out of there and I keep the computer. They can't get it out of pawn and prefer this to letting the Pawn Shop sell it and he not get anything.

He wants the $175 in cash. He says the Pawn Shop wants the $300 in cash but if they take debit cards, that's fine with him, he doesn't care.

So, fishy? Broad daylight, in front of a major store. Could this be dangerous?

Thanks!

Not dangerous, but... unless this is a primo PC, you're probably getting ripped off.

I just checked, and the pawn only takes cash, so I would have $475 cash on me.

I checked the laptop... $750 at least everywhere. He said he bought it at Best Buy 8 months ago but was unable to get a receipt from them.

Well, the guy called me back (caller ID I guess), and said he lives 45 mins away but is at mother's house today and if I want it today, it has to be in the next 15 mins, otherwise it'll have to be tomorrow.

He said he also had another one he was selling for $900 that he bought a week ago (paid $1400). He said he's selling both because of family reasons. That the one in the shop is the girlfriend's and they hate pawn shops making a killing on them, so they just want to do this to keep the pawn shop from selling it for $700.

He reiterated he couldn't get the receipt from Best Buy.

sounds like they are hotter than a $25 pistol on a Saturday night. Any deal that sounds too good to be true, usually is.

HHhhhmmm... now that you said that... if it's stolen then the police can come after me! (not for any criminal charges, but at least to get the computer back). He said he can show me a receipt for the $1400 one dated a week ago, he still has that one. So that one would have to be legit wouldn't it?

yeah, if you can match the computer to the sales receipt fairly concretely. One favorite trick is to steal many items and by one, then use the receipt to return them all. Its why stores go to great lengths now to check on receipts for returned items.

*late edit: Just on the surface, this guy sounds wicked hinky...

And I would have to cry B.S. on the week old receipt. If that was true he could take it back to Best Buy for all $1400. This one is full of crap and looking to take you down...I'm thinking he's going to pull some variation of the Gypsy Switch on you.

Walk away...No, RUN!

This one has a bigger hardrive, more memory, built-in DVDR, more ports, better (Wide)screen.

I can sell mine for -at least- $475 which is what I'd do, I'm not keeping both, so it'd be an upgrade.

But I hear a Nay coming from here right? Called him back and say no thanks without the receipt?

Well, I told him no thanks.

I did mention returning the laptop to the store, and he said that they were accepting a return but would mail him a check (which does sound legit, if you pay by check and it's over $500 most stores mail you back a check) and he needs it by Monday or they lose a house, so that's why he's trying to see that one.

With this you would go to get the laptop and he would say "Let me put it in this way cool laptop case I got with it, for free" then he would walk it out with you, and switch it for another case, same size, color weight. When you get it home, Voila! Your new laptop has turned into a plank of wood.

Whoa, whoa -- laptop? That changes things. Umm... well, it's almost certainly stolen. Did you ask him why he's buying a $1400 laptop and pawning it almost immediately?

I say check with the police. If they clear it, I say go for it.

sounds like you have a lot of chances to get screwed. I wouldn't do it.

If you need a deal, look at costco

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...Path=84*21423*

This is not bad at all, and amazingly enough the Averatec machines are fairly reliable.

What's the battery life on something like this?

I'm looking for alternatives to IBM and Toshiba.

I wouldn't do it .. what if it didn't work? You're taking a big risk for a chance of only saving a small amount of money.

Well I didn't do it, but it goes for at least $800 on eBay (the $750 ones were an older model), so it was at least $350 in savings... that's a lot It was a Gateway 3522GZ.

if one ever did this the way to do it would be to have a friend come up behind him as you give the money so he can't rob you
preferably an armed friend

I think this sounds absolutely crazy. There is no way I would drop that kind of money on something that didn't come in a box, with a receipt, at the very least. If he just bought one of the computers a week ago, you can't tell me that he 'just didn't know' about his house situation then.

You don't lose your house with zero notice within a week. I say save up and look for a brand new computer.. there's tons of deals.. and at least have your money protected by being able to go back to the store where you purchase it in the event you get a lemon.

Using it as a PC, 2 hours (it is not like the centrino 4 hour life of the Dells)

But what is cool is you can use it as a DVD player only and get closer to 3 hours (custom software that powers everything down in dvd mode except the min)

Batteries are $120, so get a spare to have 4 hours

I agree with Bloomiesgirl, the BestBuy/house situtation sounds like complete BS, combined with the fishy pawns shop setup makes me feel like you did the right thing by walking.
