Van crash kills 7 Utah students, instructor
Tuesday, September 27, 2005; Posted: 7:38 a.m. EDT (11:38 GMT)

TREMONTON, Utah (AP) -- A Utah State University van overturned Monday on a highway about 65 miles north of Salt Lake City, killing seven students and an instructor, authorities said. Three other students were injured.

The 11 occupants of the van were ejected as the vehicle rolled four times on Interstate 84 near Tremonton, said Trooper Jeff Nigbur.

Seven of the dead were Utah residents and one was from Washington state, said patrol Trooper Jeff Nigbur.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at about 4 p.m. It appeared the van's left rear tire blew out as it tried to pass another vehicle, and speed was a contributing factor, patrol Lt. Ed Michaud said.

The van's roof was collapsed to the windows, and parts of the vehicle and personal belongings littered the area near the freeway.
That's just sad.

For those who are wondering, I-84 shadows I-15.

Here's an article from the local paper.

Oh dear...

Nelson said none of the van's occupants was wearing a seat belt, and all of them were thrown from the vehicle.

"There's no question they wouldn't have been hurt in that van if they would have had seat belts on," Nelson said. "I have no doubt that there would have been more survivors."
Buckle up otters.

This is (obviously) all over the local news. I wish more news agencies would emphasize the seatbelt issue.

If they were all buckled in, wouldn't they all be dead, since the van roof crushed to the windows when it rolled? I'm not saying buckling up is always a smart thing to do, but in this case it seems they all would have had their skulls crushed if they were strapped to the van.

"No question they wouldn't have been hurt"? maybe not death, but rolling 4 times at that speed, you're gonna feel it.

If I were in a van that was starting to roll, I would duck down to the side and hold on for dear life, not look out the window and watch it all happen.

I think the media is loathe to imply in situations like this that the deceased had bad judgement.

those converted econoline vans are a death trap that the government needs to ban.

they are made to carry cargo, not people.

they sit too high up and the weight of the van isnt set up to work well with people in it.

there are so many accidents every year with these vans.

when i was in a tennis tournament one year, one of the tennis teams flipped in one of those vans and a lot of people died.

people think just because you put seats in them they are safe.

I was in an accident a long time ago where the vehicle rolled a few times.
From 1st hand experience I can say that it's very fast and you can't tell
up from down when it happens. Gravity and centrifugal force pretty much
dictate where you're going (hopefully not far if you're belted).
