What Do You Love/Hate Most About Being An "Adult"?

Spawned by another thread, what do you love about being an adult? What do you hate most about it? For me, now that I'm divorced, I love being able to do whatever the hell I want (within limits) with no one in the world to tell me that I can't. If that means staying in my bathrobe all day and playing on the computer or watching movies (or whatever), that's cool. What I hate is all the responsibility of having to support myself (work) and all the headaches and frustration that goes along with it. I also find myself very sad when keeping up with current events and seeing what a cruel, unkind world we live in. I long for the days when I had my innocence and was relatively care-free.

I miss not having to pay rent. Not having to pay car insurance. Not having to pay health insurance. Not having to be a fully responsible human being.

Of course I am doing all those things now. No, I don't mind being a responsible human being, but damn...I enjoyed being a kid! I didn't want to grow up.

As for what I like? I like the independence, I like making all my own choices about what i'm going to do with my day. Obviously, i'm single.

Of course everyone is going to miss not being responsible for themselves... I mean shit, who wants to pay rent, taxes, food, clothes, etc. But think about when you were younger... did you actually have any money? When I was young I still had to work to get cash... and even then, I didn't have much. Minimum wage from a parttime job doesn't get you far.

What I do miss the most is home cooking.

I miss being able to get away with things beacuse "I am a child." I also got a lot of respect for being smart, respectful, etc when I was younger. Now, it's expected. I'm just another guy.

I like being able to do what I want, when I want. If I want to stay up until 6 am, grab a bottle of beer and cook a steak, you better believe I will. And I'll raise that beer to everyone driving out of the apt complex to work.

I like that I can do what I want, and the main person I have to answer to is myself. I like that I no longer have to hear adults telling me "when you're older..." or "when you're in the real world..."

I miss not having to live in the "real world," and having an upcoming test be my biggest care in the world. Of course, my missing that now is due to hindsight; at the time, it didn't seem all that special.

I hate the constant worries of if I will provide my three children a good life and future.

Funny, I used to be able to stay up later as a kid. Now as a responsible adult that has to be at work every morning, I find myself in bed at around 10pm every night. Stupid world centered around morning people.

I hate the fact that, as an adult, people expect me to take things seriously.

I love the fact that I no longer have to explain what I want to be when I grow up.

Hate getting older and feeling older --- but honestly, the thing I hate most is the stress. I tend to stress more now about things like money, buying a house, moving, etc. blah

However, I wouldn't want to be a kid again -- maybe 20 again, but not a kid. I remember once I was walking thinking about how it sucks getting older when I passed by a school. The teachers were yelling at all the kids and I thought, man I'm glad I'm not a kid anymore.

Seems like it's almost universal as far as being responsible, having to pay bills and feeling older as well as getting that way. I hate hardships when they come along and knowing that I'm the one who has to do what is necessary to get through them, be they big or small. Our parents and grandparents knew them in a much more pronounced way than many of us ever will, however.

Each generation gets a better, easier life, at least it seems that way to me.
I'm a single dad and watch my son enjoying his life knowing that there's someone who will see to it he's fed, clothed, housed, gets many if not most of the things he wants as a kid, all the while knowing he is a higher priority than everything else in his old dad's world......pretty great way to live if ya ask me!

Yeah the stress thing for me is sometimes hard to manage. I remember being extremely stressed out before the teacher gave us back our rated math exams in high school ( I had the sweats and stomach problems hehe), thinking that if I failed I would become a bum and my world would end. But looking back on this event it's such a minuscule if not insignificant event in my life that I wish I didn't care much then.

Of course I miss being carefree and fully taken care of but I enjoy being responsible for my own well being as an adult more.

Funny anecdote, last year I stumbled upon a geeky 10 year old who was being bullied by a couple of 13 or 14 year olds; I just showed up near the nerdy kid and asked him if those were the guys I was supposed to "take care of" for him. Having been in that situation as a child it was fun to help out.
