So I got a call from the Army National Guard today...

And I didn't know how to tell the guy politely that I would not enlist -- hey, I was put on the spot. In reality, I knew the reasons were as follows:

(1) An almost definate assignment in Iraq for a year or more away from my family,
(2) Giving up my career salary for a much smaller compensation (while in Iraq),
(3) Having no way out -- based on all of the talk on the news, the military is forcing reenlistment.
(4) Having to halt the formation of my new company right as I receive funding.

I have tremedous respect for the military, and have seriously considered joining twice. I think at some point, I will join the reserves -- but only if my skills are put to good use. I'm sure the military has many more uses for an engineer than just as a foot soldier. (i.e. in the Army Corp of Engineers, or with a little training, on a nuclear powered vessel.

Why didn't you just say you were gay and then say, "Ooops, I guess I told."

Because at this point, the military will hire you, even if you're gay. Sexual politics are more likely to happen during periods where they have the convenience of discriminating. Since Iraq, they need bodies. And they don't care where or what kind of person you are, just as long as you can take orders and shoot relatively accurately.

"I'm quite sure I'm not interested, so let's not take up your time or mine. Good day." {click}

This is either polite or at least "not rude" and the key is the {click} Don't wait for a response.

I remember I had an army recruiter call me way back when (right around when I turned 18) At first I tried to be polite, but the 2nd phone call I just told him that I wasn't interested. Very persistant people.

Consider remaining silent and wait for them to hang up.

Tell em Iraq isn't the kind of closure you're looking for.

Insist on payment upfront. All good hitmen demand payment upfront.

Ha-ha! Oh, ! What a !!!

Keep tellin' yerself that, there, shiny. Just try going down to your recruiter with that. I guarantee you won't even get to look at the available jobs list.

Unless your recruiter's a guy lookin' to pad his numbers. Which he might be. But, trust me, there's no way an openly gay dude can be in the military today. NO way.

Can't see it happening. If you're OPENLY gay, and insist on it being on your signup record, then the "don't ask/don't tell" goes out the window. They can't just ignore it or try and discharge you later when it's convenient.

No single recruitment officer is going to risk their career by ignoring something like this when it's official policy not to enlist gays. Far easier to move onto the next potential signup.

Now, if and when official policy changes (which it will at some stage), then you're screwed.

Well, you must be talking about the US Army. I should've been more specific about which branch I was talking about.

You could say you would only join the Navy because you get to be a "seaman" and there are Rear-Admirals around.

Just say you will happily join and serve your country but you want it written in your enlistment contract that you will NOT be deployed overseas.

Just tell them no. They can't "make" you join. If you don't want to join, don't join. The Army has been bugging me for the past two years and I tell them no.

I know I'm getting older. The armed forces don't call me anymore. Either that or it's because I don't have a land line.

The marines?

Actually, I think you're right. I've met more suspect people in the other three branches than I ever met in my own.
