Cold Heat Soldering?

I see the banner for Cold heat. Does anyone on here have or has at least tried using it?

I wanna know how the damn thing works. Hot enough to melt solder and then cool to the touch in less than a second seems like quite a claim.

seen it on tv - looks neat... don't have soldering needs that go beyond the 35 year old cheapie radio shack iron I have though.

There must be a major ad push on these; I've seen discussions about them pop up recently at several sites.

From what I've read, it really works. You have to use thin solder and it's not good for PCB work. It seems to work by using a split tip which is an anode and cathode. The spark between the two is what heats the stuff up and melts the solder.

The best thread I saw was over at Build Your Own Arcade Controls ...

The arcade geeks who have tried them out say they suck big big. Its basically a mini arc welder, no small stuff. Also the tips burn out fast. Everyone who i heard got one, returned it.

Not a mini arc welder, just a (really crappy) resistance soldering iron.

I was just on the 82-87 Oldsmobile forums and they said it works great.
