Speaking of unearned ribbons and medals (yet another Bush/Kerry Viet Nam thread)

There's a story floating around the left-wing echo chamber that says Bush wore ribbons he didn't earn while serving with the TANG. Loathe as I am to link to anything in the wankosphere (be it Democratic Underground or Free Republic), here's the thread on DU:

http://www.democraticunderground.com...ess=132x654437

It's also been picked up by Daily Kos and Buzzflash. It'll be interesting to see if 1) there's anything to this story, and 2) if it gets looked at by real media.

It looks weak.

If DU is pinning it's hopes on a doctored report, they'll need more proof.

Wow!

It's a good thing he's not using those ribbons as his primary qualification to be president.

I asked the administrators to ban the next member to post a new Bush/Kerry Vietnam thread. Just a warning.

I believe Jason F, however mistakenly, doesn't believe Kerry has made his Vietnam service the cornerstone of his campaign. He's dead wrong, of course.

Too bad he wasn't wearing the "Perfect Attendance" or "Punctuality" badge. That would be something!

You don't agree??

Do you believe you should have the 'freedom' to shout fire in a crowded theater when there is no fire?

There must be limits to individual freedom in a society.

Well, as long as you agree with certain number of his views, go ahead but if you don't...

It was probably just a typo. It wasn't the Outstanding Unit Award, it was the Standing Out Away From Your Unit Award.

One should absolutely have the "freedom" to do as you illustrate. We act in society according to ethical guidelines rooted in the Law of Reciprocity.

It is not the role of the State to determine the "individual freedoms in a society," it is the role of the society -- or the community, or the tribe, or the family.

If one does not wish to be unnecessarily panicked by a false shout of "Fire!" in a crowded theater, one simply refrains from engaging in that specific behaviour, with the not-unreasonable expectation that others will follow suit.

That it is possible to break this "rule" without significant comeuppance is not an indictment of a society's ability to guide itself ethically, nor is it a sign that the State need step in to mediate where the society/community/tribe/family has failed.

Thus, when George W. Bush makes the assertion "There ought to be limits to freedom," it is a severe blow to a free society.

When DVDTalk moderators make the same assertion, the rules of the community/tribe are laid out plain.
