Officials: Hundreds Of John Kerry Yard Signs Stolen In Fla.

http://www.local6.com/news/3675937/detail.html

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Hundreds of yard signs supporting Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry have been stolen and vandalized in this heavily Republican region known as "Bush Country," officials said, prompting some Kerry supporters to hang signs from trees to deter burglars.

About 350 signs have been stolen, according to Panhandle for Kerry organizers, which met with Pensacola police Monday. The group has distributed nearly 3,400 signs.

Police said they would increase patrols and Panhandle for Kerry members planned to conduct neighborhood watches, said the group's chairman, Jerry Holt.

"We have the availability, the funds and the will to replace every sign when we find out it's missing," he said.

Pensacola resident Anne Bennett lost four Kerry signs from her front yard before putting out a homemade sign that read "Nice people don't steal or vandalize." She hung her latest sign from a pine tree limb 15 feet in the air.

"It's like you don't have a right to participate in the public debate unless you are in the majority, and that is not one of the principles on which our country was founded," she said.

Northwest Florida is a Bible Belt region filled with military bases, veterans and Republican voters. In 2000, President George W. Bush beat Democrat Al Gore by better than a 2-1 margin.

Those caught stealing signs could be charged with petty theft or criminal mischief, said Bonnie Jones, Escambia County supervisor of elections.

Holt said he doesn't believe the thieves were affiliated with the local Republican Party.

why the laughy smilie?

obviously, the people that did this are bush supporters. i don't think it's inherently obvious that this was an "official action" sanctioned by the GOP.

I, for one, think that this is brilliant. If people don't see little kerry signs on people's front lawns, they won't know that he's running for president.

In other news, several Vietnam-era patrol boats were seen cruising the Florida panhandle with Kerry campaign signs stacked in the back.

I don't know who did this but it's pretty sad. If people want to have a sign showing they support a candidate, they should be able to knowing that the signs aren't going to be stolen. I certainly hope this was just a bunch of kids or something.

I like the Kerry signs on lawns here in California. There probably as useful as Groucho's Bush in 2000 sign on his lawn in Utah.

I believe the technical answer is that signs generate enthusiasm for a candidate. A candidate with no hoopla comes off as a loser in peoples minds.

I can top that. I have Kerry stickers on all 3 cars in Texas. Now that I've lived just about everywhere, I can say that texas is bar none, the dumbest state in the union...possible exception for South Carolina.

I don't think people here know what to make of a guy dressed in a camoflauge uniform in a Miata with Florida plates and a Kerry-Edwards sticker on the back. I should get a "don't mess with texas" sticker to really confuse em!

Apparently, it's a dry-run for stealing votes in November.

But they'll need the practice of a few more elections before they'll be able to raise the dead and have them vote Republican.

You make it sound like the Kerry campaign went around and put up those signs. That isn't how it works. People put up the signs in their own yards. There's a difference.

Besides, if people in SF were pulling down Bush signs it would be just as stupid and wrong.

Actually, around here the campaign workers go around and ask permission to put the sign in your yard. They came by my house and... let's just say they won't be back.

Since I live in Portland, OR, I had a friendly Al Qaeda group come by my place and asked to put an OBL sign in my yard.

I said sure. Why not.

I hear the Republicans stirred up a big wind about a week ago in an attempt to remove all Kerry signs, but it backfired horribly.

Wasn't a guy in Oklahoma or something caught on tape this summer stealing his competitor's signs?

From the looks of it, a lot of people in my neigborhood are voting for Century 21.
