Kerry Says He Would Have voted for the Iraq War Knowing What We Know Now

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...on_el_pr/kerry

Kerry Stands by Iraq War Voting Record

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - Responding to President Bush (news - web sites)'s question with several of his own, Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) said Monday he would have voted to authorize the war in Iraq (news - web sites) knowing what he does now, but added that he would have used the power more effectively than the current commander in chief.

...

Last Friday, Bush challenged Kerry to answer yes-or-know to the question of whether he would have supported the invasion of Iraq "knowing what we know now" about the failure to find weapons of mass destruction.

"I have given my answer. We did the right thing and the world is better off for it," the president said.

In response, Kerry said, "Yes, I would have voted for the authority. I believe it was the right authority for a president to have."

Let the spinning and hypocrisy begin.

Remember, don't contradict what you said in this thread:

So much difference between the two. How to decide how to vote.

Does this mean Bush doesn't have to apologize now?

Or does it mean Kerry has to apologize?

It's all so confusing...

Obviously, today hasn't been one of the best days for the Kerry campaign.

First Cambodia - now this.

Confusing to me as well.

Perhaps we should check with Gov. Dean?

It's a tough thing for Kerry. He voted for the war resolution. He's stuck with that vote. Then he voted against (what some will say) the funding of the troops in Iraq. Now he makes a rather clusmsy, IMO, statement which is obviously meant to defend his orginal vote for the war.

I don't know how much of an actual flip flop this is because Kerry's rationale for his vote has (always?) been that he agreed with giving the president the authority, but Bush didn't execute that authority well. If you look at his response here Bush asked "whether he would have supported the invasion of Iraq", but Kerry dodged that and replied " I would have voted for the authority." According to Kerry's spin these are two separate issues.

I think it does put a large dent in Kerry's ability to use the "Bush misled us to war" claim because now he is saying he would have voted for the authority anyway. Although from the article I see he is still using it.

Not the same. He stated that he would have used the "power more effectively."

Big difference.*

Reguardless of what this means about THIS Iraq war...
...THIS COMPLETLY FLIES IN THE FACE of Kerry's vote in the first Gulf War.

Care to respond, any who were supportive of Kerry's decision in the first gulf war vote thread.

Re: Kerry Says He Would Have voted for the Iraq War Knowing What We Know Now

In response, Kerry said, "Yes, I would have voted for the authority. I believe it was the right authority for a president to have."

Then he had a few barbed questions for Bush.

"Why did we rush to war without a plan to win the peace? Why did you rush to war on faulty intelligence and not do the hard work necessary to give America the truth?

"Why did he mislead America about how he would go to war. Why has he not brought other countries to the table in order to support American troops in the way they deserve it and relieve the pressure on the American people?"

Kerry faulted Bush for the use he made of the authority he had to wage war.

"American presidents should not send American forces into war without a plan to win the peace. This president did not have a plan to win the peace and the evidence is still that they are scrambling and struggling to try to find a way to do it," the Democrat said.

Specifically, Kerry noted that the administration is scrambling to persuade Arab countries to dispatch Muslim forces to Iraq. "All of this should have happened in the beginning," he said.
Misleading thread title aside, how is this inconsistent with what he's been saying from the start?
It seems that the fact that you voted in support of the president's war
resolution has caused you a lot of trouble in your campaign. Do you
regret supporting the president?

What I regret most of all is the way the administration dealt with it --
the extraordinary failure of the administration to keep its promises, to
be mature and thoughtful about how you take a nation to war. They misled
us; they presented false intelligence to us. The president made a series
of promises to us -- number one, that he was gonna make every effort
possible to build a legitimate coalition. He did not -- he built a
fraudulent coalition. Second, he was gonna exhaust the remedies of the
United Nations and the inspection process. He did not. And third, that
he would go to war as a last resort. He did not.

I voted to protect the security of our country, based on the notion that
the only way to get inspectors back in was to have a legitimate threat
of force and the potential of using it. They took that legitimacy and
bastardized it. If I were president, we would not be in Iraq today -- we
would not be at war. This president abused the process.

...

I mean, when I voted for the war, I voted for what I thought was best
for the country. Did I expect Howard Dean to go off to the left and say,
"I'm against everything"? Sure. Did I expect George Bush to **** it up as
badly as he did? I don't think anybody did.

What do you think a poll among Democrats would reveal asking "Knowing what we know today, should the Senate have authorized war"?

Again, Kerry voted to give Bush Carte Blanche. You can't give somebody that kind of power and then bitch about how it was used.

I think his argument is that he voted to give the President the authority to declare war and would do so again, not that he himself would have used the authority in the same way.

i was going off the question in the article:

"the question of whether he would have supported the invasion of Iraq "knowing what we know now" about the failure to find weapons of mass destruction."
