Hopefully there's a tour I haven't seen him live yet.

I do like that song. Hopefully the rest of the album is good, as well.

That single does nothing for me. I'll still give the album a shot but Gilmour's music mostly puts me to sleep these days. Pink Floyd breaking up in the 1980s was probably for the best, who knows how many forgettable albums they would have done if Waters and Gilmour had stayed together.

Re: David Gilmour - Luck and Strange (9/6/24)

I really liked "On an Island" and being a PF/Gilmour fan I gotta give it a chance. "Rattle That Lock" was decent. But most of the lyrics were written by his wife.
I do think some fans are wanting to hear PF more than solo Gilmour as some have said having his wife write lyrics takes away from what he does as a musician.
If he happens to do a show in my area I'll probably go. I saw PF in '94 and I'll never forget it.

Gilmour is the best guitarist of all time IMO but his latest solo stuff is akin to glorified on hold music. although I do like the guitar solo at the end of the new song.

In the linked article above it sounds like don't expect to hear much of anything from the Pink Floyd / Waters era. Plenty to play off of A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell anyways.

On an Island was great... Rattle That Lock, not so much.

I listened to the new song 3 times and I have to say it's as bland as hell. I could listen to it 100 times and there would still be nothing catchy that would make it an earbug.

^ Agreed. The song doesn't have a pulse until 3 minutes in. The extended solo to close it out isn't half bad but as a whole, not a song I would return to on a regular basis.

Re: David Gilmour - Luck and Strange (9/6/24)

The new song is pleasant enough, but it sounds exactly like everything Gilmour's done since On An Island. I find On an Island to be terribly boring, but I liked Rattle That Lock well enough. It might even be my favorite of his solo albums, but that's not saying much because I'm pretty lukewarm on his solo stuff. Even his (imo) vastly overrated 1978 self titled album.

One thing to note is that Gilmour doesn't really like large scale touring and last time out he chose to do multiple dates in only a handful of major cities. It looks like he's doing something similar here with half a dozen shows in London and half a dozen more in Rome representing the entirety of the European leg. I don't think there's been any announcement of NA dates, but for Rattle That Lock I think he only played in New York, Toronto, Chicago and LA. I saw him in New York and it was great. Maybe the best sounding arena show I've ever been to. I don't know if that's a Gilmour thing or an MSG thing, but every other show I've been to since has been a disappointment in that respect.

Hmm, I've always been one of thos people who has said I don't want to invest a lot of time and money into traveling to a big city for a concert instead of doing it simply for the city, but this may be an exemption to make.

His solo stuff doesn't intrigue me as much as Pink Floyd. But I loved seeing Nick Mason. I got Covid the day I had tickets for Roger Waters. God bless Richard Wright. I'd like to see David Gilmour.

Re: David Gilmour - Luck and Strange (9/6/24)

North American dates announced:

LA, Hollywood Bowl, Oct 29 & 30
NY, Madison Square Garden, Nov 4 & 5

Even fewer than I thought. And booking Election Day in New York? Sure, why not.

He released a 2nd "single" from the album - vocals by his daughter Romany.

It's not great, but it's not bad either. MUCH better than the first song - which was bland as hell.
When listening to it, I keep expecting a Dido song to break out.

David Gilmour is my favorite guitarist of all time, but fuck he has lost his balls. Just give us something with some fucking kickassery already....

Waters has them. Gilmour has been stuck making soft AOR ever since the 1980s. I consider him the 4th or 5th greatest guitarist of all time but whatever energy he once had is gone.

What's funny is his guitar skills haven't diminished a bit with age but he's perfectly content rehashing bland music over and over.

Re: David Gilmour - Luck and Strange (9/6/24)

I feel as though Gilmour has gone the way of Robert Plant.
I still enjoy hearing him play guitar but I'm not going to expect anything that sounds even like his first solo album.
