Peter Jackson directed it. Makes sense.

As a kid I had only a mono tape recorder and the mono AM radio for those so hearing them on those early US "stereo" albums is just kind of odd (I didn't purchase most of their material until after they broke up). I prefer the UK mono mixes because of that.

That's good news. Thanks.

Do you mean it is smeared to the point that everyone looks like a wax scupture?

I enjoyed the video. I would have liked less silly John but Paul knows better than me what he was like. I think of John as the "Plastic Ono Band" guy. Paul has the courage to look his age, Ringo should reconsider his hairpiece. Anyway good fun.

No, that is not what he means.

The shots used of John are pretty typical of how he behaved in the years the Beatles were together. He could be serious but was usually kind of a jovial smart ass type.

Loved the video and couldn’t disagree more but i’m very partial to his dancing from the end of the Hello, Goodbye video which a lot of the silly John was taken from. It’s one of the first things I think of when I think of him.

I don't think that's a hairpiece.

Kind of a bittersweet story about a violinist who performed on the song, thinking it was for a Paul McCartney solo session and died of breast cancer before she found out that the super secret session was actually for the last Beatles song.

I don't know about Rick Beato's reaction about anything.

In a previous video he called Mountain and Foghat one hit wonders.

Re: The Beatles - Now and Then

There's no true definition of what a One Hit Wonder is -- I once saw Sinead O'Connor referred to as such and I took great exception to that. That said, Mountain and Foghat persist in the public consciousness, and make royalties as a result of one song each. That feels like a one hit wonder to me -- even though I am aware that Foghat had several hits at the time of their greatest popularity.
A litmus test : Is Rick Astley a One Hit Wonder? I know a few of his songs, but everyone knows that one.

GuessWho 11-07-23 04:11 PM

Re: The Beatles - Now and Then

Sinead O'Connor only had one song reach the Billboard Top 40. We all know that one.
Emperor's New Clothes only got to #60.

That's my litmus test since so many of us grew up on Casey Kasem and other hosts' "top 40" radio countdowns.

BTW, a band a slag a lot, Radiohead is a two-hit wonder by my definition with Creep at #37 and Nude at #37.
And for reference, Foghat had five reach top 40. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foghat#Singles

The song is solid, probably my favorite of the post-Beatles releases like Free As A Bird. The video does nothing for me.

The video seems to be aimed at nostalgic boomers.

This song and the other two songs sound to me like ideas that John had that he liked, but he thought they still needed work. They seem like early drafts. They lack energy.

After seeing the video for the song I've decided the 3 demos turned into "Beatles songs" are all contrivances of Paul's to get some kind of closure *for him* where none exists. "Now and Then" sounds like another of John's rather trifling love songs yet the video appears to be deliberately manipulated to inject a different meaning that I just don't feel exists while creating that nostalgic pull to make it resonate better. I really doubt John was singing about Paul, or the Beatles, when he wrote that song. IMHO, they're interesting experiments, but they're not true Beatles songs.

It depends on the definition of "one hit". Is it specifically referring to hit songs, or is it geared more towards album?

In Astley's case, he had two hit songs that did well and had a hit song on the second album that also did well. The 2nd album though just did ok, and only sold a fraction of what the first album sold.

It would be better if they didn't make such a big deal of the three songs, Paul just can't seem to let certain things go.

I'll trust 2 of the Beatles opinions on what makes a "true Beatles song" over some dude on the internet sorry to tell you.

That's fine - I was just stating my opinion.

IMHO, calling these "Beatles" songs isn't that much different than calling "Yesterday" a Beatles song. In spite of the group somewhat working on it together for a long time, even Martin said: "['Yesterday'] wasn't really a Beatles record." He and Epstein agreed to release it as such so as to not make it look like the Beatles were splitting up. And *because* it's not a "true" Beatles song, the group would not allow a UK single to be released (though it *did* get single releases in many other countries, including the US and *finally* in the UK in 1976 when their contract with EMI ended allowing EMI to package the catalog however they wished).

My opinion on the 3 "Anthology Sessions" songs not being "true" Beatles songs is based on Lennon having zero input, outside writing them, and that during the Anthology recording sessions for "Now and Then," Harrison said “This is fucking rubbish.” The jury's out on whether he was talking about the song itself or just the poor quality of the recording and that it was, essentially, impossible to get something decent sounding out of what they had to work with. According to McCartney, Harrison was the sole reason those sessions were stopped. Would he have the same opinion today with the use of MAL for the separations? Who knows... At least the estates of Lennon and Harrison were on board so it's not like McCartney took it upon himself and just did it anyway, although I think John would have taken offense with the "Wall of Sound" string sections. Those seem out-of-place, especially considering how vehemently McCartney feels about Spector doing a similar thing to some of his "Let it Be" material. McCartney also reworked the original lyrics.

The recording session lyric notes:
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...d35f660d02.jpg
By reworking the original lyrics he changed it from a simple love song to something it's not - and the song's video was also created to support that change of lyrics. It's pure manipulation on Paul's part, all based on what Lennon reportedly last said to him.

All in all, and solely my opinion, the 3 songs from those sessions are all rather sub-par Beatles material. I listen to their original back catalog quite frequently. Those 3 songs - hardly ever. I'll be purchasing copies of the newly remastered/updated "Red" and "Blue" releases. When I rip them for my media server I'll be removing "Now and Then" from the tail of "Blue" (it *really* sounds out of place) and creating a "single" that's identical to the vinyl release that'll go in it's own folder - just like I have with the other 2 singles from the Anthology sessions.
