A truly awful human being who helped make some of the greatest pop music of all time... It's a textbook example of love the art, hate the artist. I do remember reading a biography of him years ago and he had a rough road from the start (father committed suicide etc) and just spiralled to his end. But boy, those songs...

Got to meet Lana Clarkson at ComicCon the summer before her murder. She was such a sweetheart. her signed dvd of Barbarian Queen is one of my most cherished and bittrsweet of my collection.

RIP to a legend. Guy made some of the best pop music of all time and forever altered music history. Truly impressive.

I always felt they should have let him out on probation, under the requirement he produces music non-stop. Why not use his genius for something good?

But yes, truly a scumbag of a person. I read Ronnie Spector's bio a few years back, Phil was a nutjob. I think she mentioned something about how he had bought a coffin for her shortly after they were married to try to intimidate her.

I'll be playing some of those compilation albums today in his honor.

A musical genius that devolved into madness from consuming the hard and fast life of the entertainment industry at its heights in the decadent '70s. Genius is a word thrown around too often but it certainly applies in Spector's case. Few of the industry's top creative talents made it unscathed through the free love and drug era of the late '60s without profound mental and/or health issues. They had little comprehension of what the wild drug experimentation would produce, leading to burn-outs and damaged minds.

i always think of the stories of the making of the Ramones End Of The Century album when I hear his name.

yeah. He basically scared the whole band off except for Joey. Dee Dee swore that wasn’t him playing bass on most of that album. Although Dee Dee’s recollection of things wasn’t exactly reliable, I tend to believe the story.

He pulled a gun on Leonard Cohen as well in the studio. I think it was one of Phil's little tricks in pushing musicians. When you brought in Phil Spector as a producer, the album was almost always more of a Phil Spector album than the performer in question. I don't think he ever moved past the era of the early '60s mentality in music that the groups themselves were disposable and mostly interchangeable - they were mere vessels for the man behind the curtain.

Maybe fifteen or twenty years ago.

I think the last remarkable things he produced were the Johnny Cash albums. I remember listening to Metallica's "Death Magnetic" for the first time and thinking it was just a really dull, forgettable record. Ditto "13," the Black Sabbath record.

I mean, you go back to the 80s and 90s, and he's behind so many great albums and musicians -- Public Enemy, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Danzig, "Reign in Blood," "South of Heaven," "Seasons in the Abyss," "Blood Sugar Sex Magic," "Shake Your Money Maker." Hell, I'd even include Slipknot's "Vol. 3 The Subliminal Verses" in there, too.

But it seems like he's just been coasting on fumes since then.

Rubin got the single best album from the Avett Brothers about a decade ago. Pretty much all of their most well-known hits come from that Rubin-produced album.

The guy was a complete asshole and a murderer....but, I love the music he put out. I just listened to his Xmas album last month!

I honestly didn't even like his producing - the songs were good despite his production - seriously, fuck him and his stupid "wall of sound"!
Maybe it sounded cool in the '60s when people were listening to the stuff on shitty receivers on shitty mono speaker, but as soon as people got decent equipment, his bullshit revealed itself to be the unnecessary, over-produced garbage that it was.
