Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2019 Nominees

I watched the Dio videos posted above. They're good. Love Pains is about what you'd expect from someone's first published song, but the vocals really sell it. Jesus Mary and Holy Ghost is exciting. So I thought I maybe was mistaken in my past assessment and I watched the video for Holy Diver. Nope, it's still dull.

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2019 Nominees

The other thing about Ronnie is that he could sing almost anything and sound great. He could have been the next Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett if he wanted to. His voice was just so amazing - listen to this for something very uncharacteristic of what you'd expect from Dio...

...and a live version when he was pushing 60...

The fact that he hasn't even been nominated is absurd. The level of ignorance and arrogance of both the nominating committee and the voters in general shows that there is a real problem with the way they run that place.

Ronnie's rolling over in the grave knowing that Vivian Campbell is in HOF but he's not.

I don't think Ronnie ever gave a single thought or care to the RRHOF

Is Viv in?

Sometimes they don’t let new guys in, like when Kiss got in it was just Paul, Gene, Ace, and Peter, and not Tommy, Vinnie, Bruce, or either Eric.

Credit to Def Leppard's lineup longevity that the "new guy" has been there 26+ years.

Both new guys. Collen ins't an original either. I guess kudos to them for including Willis when the time came.

It always feels like Campbell hasn’t been with Def Leppard that long. I guess I think he should have played with Whitesnake longer.

Then again, it blows my mind that Cliff Burton was with Metallica for less than five years, and that Trujillo is their longest serving bassist.

And don’t even get me started on Ron Wood...

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2019 Nominees

It's ridiculous that RJD hasn't even been in the running.

It would be an interesting induction though. Imagine Geezer, Ward, Iommi, Appice and about 500 others would love to stand on stage and talk about their experiences with Ronnie. The most interesting would be Viv.

I think Tommy wasn’t allowed in because of his huge head.

I met him this past SDCC and he does indeed have a very large head. It's incredible.
Really nice guy though. Kudos to him for going from manger to band mate, though.

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2019 Nominees

I was at the ceremony Friday night. It was a blast. Seriously. I thought it would be an overlong, overproduced mess of a show, but it flowed fairly well from start to finish (including a flub during the Singles section that I'm sure will be edited out of the production).

The ceremony started at around 7:10 PM and ran for five hours... which is a long time, but we're talking six induction speeches, six artist/band speeches (for the bands there was one person representing the band as a whole, EXCEPT for The Zombies, who all spoke, and the two guys from Radiohead who bothered to show up), and four performances. Plus the All Star Jam at the end.

Here's a quick rundown of the ceremony, especially the performances; I'll put it in spoilers just in case:

Spoiler:

STEVIE NICKS
"Stand Back" -- Stevie Nicks
"Leather and Lace" -- Stevie Nicks with Don Henley
"Stop Dragging My Heart Around" -- Stevie Nicks with Harry Styles
"Edge of Seventeen" -- Stevie Nicks
Induction Speech: Harry Styles
Acceptance Speech: Stevie Nicks

RADIOHEAD
Induction Speech: David Byrne
Acceptance Speech: Phil Selway, Ed O'Brien
No performance

ROXY MUSIC
Induction Speech: Simon LeBon and John Taylor (Duran Duran)
Acceptance Speech: Bryan Ferry
"In Every Dream Home A Heartache" -- Roxy Music
"Out of the Blue" -- Roxy Music
"Love Is The Drug / More Than This" -- Roxy Music
"Avalon" -- Roxy Music
"Editions of You" -- Roxy Music

THE SINGLES
Induction Speech: Steve van Zandt
"Maybe" - The Chantels
"Tequila" - The Champs
"Money (That's What I Want)" -- Barrett Strong
"Twist and Shout" -- Isley Brothers
"Leader of the Pack" --The Shangri-Las
"Gloria" -- The Shadows of Knight

THE CURE
Induction Speech: Trent Reznor
Acceptance Speech: Robert Smith
"Shake Dog Shake" -- The Cure
"A Forest" -- The Cure
"Love Song" -- The Cure
"Just Like Heaven" -- The Cure
"Boys Don't Cry" -- The Cure

JANET JACKSON
Induction Speech: Janelle Monae (Even more stunning in person. Holy crap...)
Acceptance Speech: Janet Jackson
No performance

THE ZOMBIES
Induction Speech: Susanna Hoffs (See what I wrote about Janelle Monae...)
Acceptance Speech: Rod Argent, Colin Blunstone, Chris White, Hugh Grundy
"Time of the Season" -- The Zombies
"This Will Be Our Year" -- The Zombies
"Tell Her No" -- The Zombies
"She's Not There" -- The Zombies

DEF LEPPARD
Induction Speech: Brian May
Acceptance Speech: Joe Elliott
"Hysteria" -- Def Leppard
"Rock of Ages" -- Def Leppard
"Photograph" -- Def Leppard
"Pour Some Sugar On Me" -- Def Leppard

ALL STAR JAM SESSION
"All The Young Dudes" -- Ian Hunter, Def Leppard, The Zombies, Stevie Van Zandt, Susanna Hoffs, Brian May

In terms of speeches, Stevie Nicks easily had the best acceptance speech and Susanna Hoffs intro to The Zombies was tops. As far as performances, The Cure followed closely by Def Leppard and Stevie Nicks. The Zombies sounded really good after a shaky Time of the Season, but Roxy Music was a little off (Bryan Ferry's voice is not what it once was, but the guy is 73 after all.

Awesome. Thanks for that summary.

How hard is it to get Induction tickets? I didn't even realize they were available to the public

Sucks that Radiohead didn't perform. Or Janet, who is doing a residency here in Vegas, so it's not like she hasn't had a chance to practice a few songs.

When it’s in Brooklyn, fairly easy. When it’s in Cleveland, harder.

Janet didn’t perform because it would air on HBO.

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2019 Nominees

My wife joined the RRHOF as a "member" of some kind (like a fan club), which provided access to tickets. They were about $60 apiece (we got the cheap seats).

The place was PACKED though. The floor is mostly tables for the inductees and guests. It might not have sold out but it looked real close.

In honor of The Cure's induction I give you possibly the greatest concert movie (no disrespect to Stop Making Sense) ..... and it still has not seen a dvd let alone BD release to date

I only saw the clip on the red carpet before the show, when asked if he was excited, Robert Smith gave a curt "no".

I was hoping that The Cure, Def Leppard, Trent Reznor, Brian May, and Stevie Nicks would jam together at the end.

From Def Leppard was it just the current band members or did they let Pete Willis sit in?
