George Michael Dead 12/25/16

can't say I was a fan, even in his heyday. But most of the girls I dated back in the day were.

Same here. I liked a few of his songs but back in the day, he was very popular.

He was quite the show man live. Always loved this song. Specifically the lyrics.

George Michael gave us this video for Freedom '90 and for that I am ever grateful. :)

He had a beautiful voice. :rip: George Michael

I just posted on my FB wall that I've always said this was the best music video ever made.

Sad that he passed on Christmas, considering he wrote one of my least favorite Christmas standards, "Last Christmas".

Other than that, I thought he was a heck of an artist. He performed much of his album Listen Without Prejudice, Volume One himself, and it's always been one of my top 10 favorite albums. I've always considered it an underappreciated work.

I cannot fucking believe that 2016 managed to kick us in the nuts once again. I loved George Michael's music. Great songwriter and performer. 2016 needs to fuck off and die already.

With the way 2016 has went for 80's Music Icons, I hope Madonna and Janet Jackson are somewhere safe right now.

Make It Big, Faith and Listen Without Prejudice, Volume One are classics.

Last Christmas indeed.

As a child of the 80's who grew up with MTV, most of the singers who dominated that decade have died prematurely:

Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Prince and now George Michael.

Wasn't a major fan, but liked some of his stuff (probably more than I was willing to admit to anyone at the time :| ) Regardless, I'm saddened by his passing and curse 2016 for taking another artist/celebrity/talent from us.

Dear 2016: Fuck. You. Another tragic loss, and on Christmas, too. Nothing is off limits for the grim reaper, especially this year.

Was never a Wham fan, but loved his solo stuff. Agree about Freedom '90 - the best video of all time. Such a clever and artistic reaction to the MTV idol-making machine of the time.

Re: George Michael Dead 12/25/16

When I was growing up, he truly was every little hungry schoolgirl's pride and joy. For those of us who were "too cool" for pop, it was easy to write him off as a shallow artist. But you know what? When I got a little older and was able to listen without prejudice (pun definitely intended), I came to appreciate that he was an extremely talented musician. And in hindsight, I think Faith is one of the all time great albums, and his catalog with Wham! and as a solo artist outstanding.

The world sucks just a little bit more without him in it.

5:45 PM PT -- Sources directly connected with George and in a position to know tell us the singer died from heart failure. We're told he was sleeping throughout the episode and suffered no pain.

You think these are bad. CNN had a huge header with his picture that reads:
Last Christmas

I thought they were funny. Of course, if you knew him personally - then I apologise for laughing and I'm sorry for your loss.

Also, it's not like people will magically stop dying once once it's 2017.
Sure we've had a decent amount of premature celebrity deaths this year - but the volume of deaths will get worse overall. There was a huge influx of entertainers in the 60's and 70's and they're getting old now.

My father passed away 3 weeks ago, so 2016 sucked for me on a personal level.

Re: George Michael Dead 12/25/16

The past couple decades had a large number of entertainers die simply because we, at our age, grew up watching and listening to them and they were older than us to begin with. So naturally it's going to seem like an influx of deaths.

TomOpus 12-25-16 10:20 PM

Re: George Michael Dead 12/25/16

I don't think it not only the number of deaths but the number of celebrity heavyweights.

and it's a great album with hours of his classics. Sad to read about his passing. So many celebrities and entertainers dying prematurely this year. It's tragic, but I know it's part of life.

Well said (and nice reference). Damn this sucks. I went to every concert he had in Detroit, with the one exception being the cancelled Detroit stop on the Make It Big tour back in '85. Dude was a helluva pop star.

I used to open with a Judy Garland song for about 30secs (Somewhere Over The Rainbow was always popular but I sometimes switched it every 4 weekends), then would overlay an instrumental of Monkey (with some whip references and monkey sounds I had to record then hook up to the mixer), outro-ing to I Want Your Sex.

Mostly tailored to the crowd I was entertaining, and after completing my mission of a few hours to four hours of getting everyone extremely wet, I went home smelling like cig smoke and cheap musky-scented smoke that was all the rage back then (early to mid 90s) with new equipment being released making it easier.

I have to say, back then, I wasn't as critical of society or the world. We all had fun. It was straight, bisexual, gay, and whoever else, just dancing off our troubles and by the end of night, everyone was happy, I was haggard-happy, and the world got along another night to live for the next day. And that next day was going to be facing whatever realities we all faced. But those one and even two nights of dancing on the weekends, we all came together and didn't even need to talk.

I just mixed, and they just danced.

The world has sure changed since then. Sure, we all had opposing viewpoints but not like today.

I think we need more nightclubs in America, playing the songs of a few decades ago. This was true music. Talent. Sharp, cutting lyrics that defined who you were. Exceptional performances. Amazing people.

Gonna be dusting off some older mixes this week, in memory of George.

One on one.
