Well for one, Kirk lost the hard drive with all his riffs that he wrote for this album, but more over I'm pretty sure his input is about the same it was in 1983. Metallica has been James and Lars's band for a long time.

Re: METALLICA: "HARDWIRED…TO SELF-DESTRUCT" 2CD/3CD Deluxe 11/18/16
I was in high school when Kill 'em All came out in 83. The record store I shopped at had a large metal section and would offer a deal when buying 2 albums. I don't think I bought them at the same time but Kill 'em All and Motorhead's leather-bound best of collection are two of my most memorable purchases. Introducing my friends to Whiplash set off a chain reaction through the small metal community in my school. I had my grandmother sew a large Kill 'em All album cover back patch on my denim jacket which raised a few eyebrows around my catholic school.
Anyway, they were my favorite band for the first half of their career. After their black album things trailed off for me. I'm thinking I may get this on vinyl to try to recapture the experience of those earlier days. Fingers crossed.

Metallica is going to sell out arenas and stadiums until the day they retire, I don't think they are sitting around saying, Geez guys, these news songs really aren't hitting with the 18-29 demo, we better not play any more songs off this album we just spent the last 18 months of our life busting our asses on.
Your comment strikes me more as just the tired old, bag on Metallica for the sake of bagging on Metallica thing.

If the setlist looks like that after the record releases then yeah I'd say it's fairly telling.
I assume with Death Magnetic came out they did at least a few songs from it live, but look at that set list now - zero DM songs. It seems like a shorter set than a headliner would typically do though.
And seriously - 4 encores? That's so fucking stupid. I don't know if that's the norm or not now, but I've always hated that tradition. Planning for encores seems ridiculous to me - everyone knows it's going to happen so it's basically coerced cheering to "convince" the artist to come back out. If they must do the encore shtick, do one. Maybe two.

You're really grasping at straws dude. The 2 new songs they played are also the only 2 songs they've released for the album. Coincidence? Seem's logical to me that they are either waiting for the new videos to be released or for the album to come out before they roll out more new songs live.

Bunkaroo hit the nail on the head. The album, which I've heard, is not good. Neither was DM. And unfortunately, Metallica has hit the point in their careers where people go to their shows to hear the classics.
I like Metallica, I think they are a good band and great musicians. When they perform, they are as tight as a drum head. They have an epic catalog.
It's okay to admit their recent stuff is not great. Really. Your pillow can take the tears.
