Great bands that have been neutered by classic rock radio?
I know there are quite a few but I honestly think no one has it worse than Led Zeppelin. They are one of only a few great bands that I once loved that I still think are great, but just can't listen to anymore. Classic Rock radio and the way they mythologize, overplay and put these bands on a pedestal only works as a disservice to the legacy of these musicians.

Sabbath and AC/DC.
Radio just wore Sabbath out and AC/DC has dozens upon dozens of songs, but only about 4 are ever in rotation. Aerosmith is in the same ballpark as AC/DC. Same 4 songs, over and over.

I was there for a long time with Zeppelin but after not listening to them that much for years I have gained a 'new' appreciation.

My local classic rock station used to play mainly the 60s and 70s, and the only AC/DC song they ever played was Shook me all night long. But in the last year or two the format has changed to 80s and 90s and they actually played Let's Get It Up. I was shocked.

Good thread. I can't listen to a lot of stuff anymore because of overplay on the radio when I was younger. AC/DC would be one. Even stuff like Nirvana, STP, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc. that got played out long ago.

After Eliminator, it was all over for ZZ Top.
Still a hoot to hear "And flippin' out with Great Danes" being played in endless rotation on public airwaves.

For me it's the "classic rock" genre altogether that's ruined for me.
During the 80's I couldn't stand most of the music being released, so I buried myself in classic rock - my own media and through classic rock radio.
By the time the 90's rolled around I was sick of classic rock and didn't take to grunge or rap/hip-hop - so I just stopped listening to music for about 8 years.
Started listening to music again in the late 90s, picking and choosing between pop/rock. classical, jazz, etc. - but still have no desire to listen to classic rock. I'll actually go out of my way to avoid it. Much of it seems silly and and pretentious to me today.

The Classic Rock format will make me sick of certain songs because of how much they are overplayed by stations. But that format rarely goes for deeper tracks and so when I listen to those bands, I skip the overplayed songs and go for the deeper tracks that are not overplayed.

For me the answer is as simple as any band they play. Because with only a couple exceptions, they never really dig that far into their catalogs. Which is why I rarely listen to true "classic rock" stations.
I tend to lean towards stations that play just about anything randomly between the 1960's and 2000's. Still a lot of the same songs, but there is enough variety to keep me from getting burned out on any one band like I would listening to a "classic rock" station.

Terrestrial radio in general does a good job of never making me want to listen to an artist again. Repeating the same songs over and over again is the main reason I don't listen to the radio at all, and haven't really since around 2001.

Oh, and I forgot the overplay of "You Better You Bet" here. Which I think is one of the worst songs the Who ever recorded.

This isn't just an issue with classic rock radio. All radio overplays a few select songs to the point of nausea. Given how much competition there is from Spotify, iTunes, Pandora and so on, you'd think some of these stations would go crazy and completely buck the trend and start playing all sorts of shit, but no. I rarely listen to the radio anymore, but when I do it's usually college stations that don't have a corporate mandate.

Same here. But they still never expand the playlist beyond what you would find on the Mandatory Metallica set. Same issue they have with the other artists, a limited greatest hits mentality. Which get really insane when there are bands like the Beatles, Stones, Who, Rush, etc. with 20+ original studio albums to pull from vs. the far fewer Metallica albums.

I can't listen to Zeppelin anymore and have been a huge fan since I was a kid - I will never willingly play Stairway as long as I live. Boston, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Aerosmith, Skynyrd...thanks to years of listening to the local classic rock radio station has just ruined it for me, I'd rather hear nails driven across a chalkboard than hear a Steve Miller song. I'm also a big Rush fan but can't stand to hear Tom Sawyer another time, that's another one the radio ruined for me.

I am already there with Queen.
The problem is they play the same 5 fucking Queen songs and forget what a vast variety of music that Queen made.
But it is really like that for almost all classic rock bands. The station picks their top (at least what they think) 5 songs on almost every band and that is what gets played. Same for Guns N Roses, Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Metallica, Bad Company (who knew they made more than two songs!) and on and on.
It's annoying. Which is why I don't listen to classic rock radio stations. We have a great station here in Birmingham that mixes new and old rock (classic, modern, alternative, punk, etc.) and that is the only way I listen to classic rock anymore (when I am actually listening to radio).

I think when radio switched from vinyl to cd they bought "best of" cds to replace the main albums. Do they even use cds anymore? Or is everything loaded into some master computer or something.
I've heard DJs mention they are not allowed to vary from playlist established by management. I wonder if bookkeeping practices have changed.
