For some reason I've been thinking about the civil war lately. This doesn't have Neil Young's searing guitar but I like it.

Seeing The Barbarians perform Hey Little Bird on the T.A.M.I. Show is always cool, as they stuck out like a sore thumb (in the best way possible) alongside some of the more wholesome musical acts at the time (Lesley Gore, Gerry And The Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer, Jan And Dean) on stage that day. James Brown and The Rolling Stones garnered all the attention as the headliners but this 4-piece band from Cape Cod - with the Keith Moon-esque one-handed drummer - really stole the show, IMO.

This was the jam in 1991 and I wore out the cassette.
It hits harder than "Today was a Good Day"

I have an affinity for 60s Psychedelic/Fuzz Guitar/Garage rock and enjoy seeking out & finding lesser known or overlooked gems like this one here.

Had not heard this song in a long time. Heard it yesterday and it has stuck with me how beautiful the harmonies are. Kinda haunting.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a perfect pop song:

London-based punk band 999 with their 1978 single 'Homicide'. Cool trivia: The two guys who founded the group placed an ad in Melody Maker back in '76 looking for band members. Chrissie Hynde auditioned for them ... and they turned her down!

My former boss's son introduced me to that song. He was like a cool older brother, who used to play bass in a punk band back in the late 70s ... much to the displeasure of his father who wanted/expected him to join the family business instead of "wasting his time" lol. He told me about the time his band was playing in a small town a couple of hours outside of Edmonton at a community hall or Legion, definitely not the type of venue they would normally play at. At the end of the set, their lead singer decided to make a statement by taking a portrait of Queen Elizabeth down from the wall and smashing it on the stage. Yeah, well, as you can imagine that didn't go over very well in rural Alberta and my buddy and his band barely escaped with their lives lol. Somehow, about a year later, they were back playing that same community hall again ... with the portrait of the queen now bolted to the wall behind protective glass.
He and I went to a lot of concerts together (The Stones, Van Halen, Bowie ... even the Sex Pistols on their reunion tour in Vancouver). It turns out we even went to the same Kiss concert back in '77 before we knew each other (I was 9, he was a teenager). He laughed as he told me that he stood up a girl he was seeing to go to the concert with a buddy instead and she never talked to him again after that. There was no way he was going to miss that concert. Sadly, he passed away a few years ago. Just a great guy.

One of may faves from MeShell Ndegeocello's album "Bitter". The whole album is dark and melancholic which is right up my alley.

I first heard of the song and band from a Duff McKagen interview I listened to years ago. Apparently he was a big fan.

This one's definitely in my personal all-time Top 10; the last minute or so is breathtakingly gorgeous:
