Things GNR had 1988-1991
--mainstream radio airplay
--daytime MTV play
--mainstream media appearances & news headlines
--suburban female fans

The bands you mentioned were huge to their niche fanbase, me included, but a niche can't change the world until it busts out bigger.

Saw the show last night. Wow. They were GREAT! Especially Slash -- I mean everyone knows he's a legendary guitarist, but to see him work like that for as long as he did last night and sound so amazing, it was really something special. No opening act, thankfully. They started on time at 7:45 and played for 3 1/2 hours (!). They played just about every familiar song in their catalogue as well as some really deep and obscure songs and a couple of (new) covers. Axl sounded pretty good and while not the showman he once was, did a fine job. Liked the staging with a giant video screen that extended to the stairs on the stage in front of them and projected CGI images all night (including lots of guns and bullets and lots of roses and petals - programmed by a very literal-minded artist apparently). Really a great show all around.
Man they sold a TON of merch. I waited in line for like 45 minutes to buy something. I got a Vegas-only shirt GnR Slot Machine that I thought looked pretty cool.
