Best Re-Issues

I was wondering what people thought was the best re-issue out there. I am looking to upgrade a ton of cd's and want to know which ones are worth it. Any genre, it doesn't matter.

Re: Best Re-Issues

If you enjoy Ian McCulloch, I highly recommend getting the deluxe UK reissues of his three solo albums. They are absolutely loaded with every possible b-side and stray track.

Re: Best Re-Issues

The Smashing Pumpkins reissues seem to be pretty impressive, if you're into them.

Re: Best Re-Issues

Are the Pumpkins re-issues better sound wise or just better that they now include all the b-sides and rarities with each respective album?

The Zeppelin re-issues are slightly better sound wise. And some of the newly added stuff is worth a listen. If I didn't already own the studio box set from years ago I would have been buying these along the way.

Oooohh....did not know about those. I think I like "Candleland" better than any Bunnymen album.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet but The Beatles 2009 remasters are ace.

Re: Best Re-Issues

About 10 years old now, but I always thought the Talking Heads reissues were some of the most substantial increases in sound quality.

Not only did they remaster the thin, tinny sounding originals to CD, but 5.1 audio with lots of bonus tracks. Albums that I never really liked all the much (Little Creatures, Naked) suddenly sounded amazing. I thought these were truly a revelation.

Sadly, it seems they have completely disappeared. Probably due to their issue on the failed dual disc/DVD-audio format (CD on one side/DVD-audio on the other).

Sadly, it seems that all currently available are the crappy versions.

Edsel Records in the UK put them out as deluxe versions.

I think Gish sounds better than the original release, but I couldn't really tell on SD and Mellon Collie. I'm more in the camp that they are better because of the b-sides. There is some great stuff included in those.

Yeah, but all the better b-sides have been available for years. What I was hoping for is some improvements in sound. I would pick up Gish and the others again if there is a significant improvement in the sound quality.

If Gish sounds much better I'll be picking that up. The ones I'm hoping sound much better are Machina I and II. Some songs from those already sound better on the best of collection.

Re: Best Re-Issues

I'm not what you call an "audiophile" so for me "better" means "the audio sounds clearer & I don't have to crank up the volume to hear things. I'm just happy I got a good quality version of the song "Autumn Nocturne". I have no why I love the song as much as I do.

That being said, I want the Machina 1/2 set, just for the better quality Machina 2 songs. None of this early 2000's vinyl MP3 rips.

Yeah, those are really good releases. I wish they would reissue these Talking Heads albums as "Blu-ray Audio" discs given that the mastering is already done, just need to be released on a currently relevant format.

The McCartneys also.

There are a lot of live albums that have been restored to give you the entire show. Rory Gallagher-Irish Tour '74 is great.

If you're into original album covers the list is pretty long of those reissued with original gatefolds, etc. in digipak or mini LP packaging.

Re: Best Re-Issues

I heartily recommend any of the various albums that Steven Wilson has remixed in the last few years. The man is an aural genius.

Re: Best Re-Issues

Second the Steven Wilson remixes, especially the Jethro Tull.

Also check out the reissue of Forever Changes by Love.

Oh, and The Jayhawks reissues are really nice.

Basically search around for AAA reissues and you'll find there are plenty.

The mono box set is fantastic! I'm really liking the Zeppelin reissues too.

Re: Best Re-Issues

I've been tracking down the T.Rex reissues over the last couple years. Were primarily released in the EU so kind of hard to track down, but well worth it. I've been gradually scooping them up.
