Re: Metric
Meh. Known them for years. They're great.

Re: Metric
I like listening to them, but it's hard for me to watch their videos/performances, as their singer looks exactly like an ex-girlfriend that I'm still in love with, who left me for another dude...

Re: Metric
Ha, no kidding. I wish I had an ex girlfriend who looked like Emily Haines.

Okay, now that would hurt. Sorry about that, I hated having that feeling when I went through that with an ex.

And she looked Emily Haines? You should have worked your hardest in order to keep her. Oh well. |

If you were such a great boyfriend then why did she leave you? You probably got complacent and turned into a doormat or a bore and she lost respect for you and left. It happens.
Honestly, she found someone she could better manipulate. At least I didn't have to bail her out of jail after getting two DUI within one month of leaving me. And she looked Emily Haines? Re: Metric
My introduction to Metric was "Gimme Sympathy". It was a freebie song from Amazon & I kind of liked it, but I really liked "Gold Guns Girls". I ended up getting "Fantasies" and "Synthetica" when it came out. Not a band I go all out crazy for, but they have some songs I really like.
I do like "Black Sheep" a lot. Both versions (Metric & movie version)

If you dig Metric, you may also like the Welsh band The Joy Formidable. Their sound is similar in places, but much more heavy in most.

Re: Metric
Since others are recommending stuff, I strongly suggest y'all check out the obvious "related" choices of Stars and specifically Amy Millan's solo albums.
But also, just because I started listening to this band yesterday, and I absolutely adore this girl's voice, check out del bel, also from Toronto. Spoiler:

Re: Metric
I spun their Old Underground album yesterday and it was really good! My favorite track was Dead Disco.

Re: Metric
Here, too. Both of those tracks get played more than any of their newer stuff.
|
Re: Metric
It'll be neat to compare Grow Up and Blow Away with Synthetica, which is their current sound. I'm waiting for those two LP's to arrive.
|
Re: Metric
I think I've listened to the track Synthetica about a dozen times tonight. Love that song.
|
Re: Metric
New single released today. Not blown away, but it's solid.

Re: Metric
I like it, and I think it's one of those songs I will like even more after some listens.
Thanks for posting that Osiris :) |
Re: Metric
Not sure if this warrants a separate thread, but Metric announced their new album, Pagans in Vegas, coming September 18. Also released another new song, Cascades.

Looking forward to the new album.

Re: Metric
I know it's only two songs, but my expectations are lowering for the new album. I loved the mix between electronic and rock that Fantasies and Synthetica had. These songs have no rock elements, pretty much all electronic.

Cascades sounds like its off Chrvches album. |
Re: Metric
I'm really digging the electronic aspect of it. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a 50/50 indie rock/electronic album.

They've already gone totally away from how far off they started. Have you never heard Grow Up And Blow Away?
That being said, I will still be getting the new album. |

Yes. That is why I said "totally". I still felt there was some of that on the last two albums, but it was more of an evolution. I don't hear anything other than synths on the new tracks. Where's the guitar?
That being said, I will still be getting the new album. Like you, I'll still be getting it, too. |
Re: Metric
Seeing them in 2 weeks!
|
Re: Metric
Just spun the new album and it's terrific. Granted, if you're a fan of the indie rock stuff this has more electronica in there. Since I love electronica it's all good for me. I was surprised, in hindsight, that they played a ton of the new material at the Imagine Dragons show I saw them at 2 months ago. Of course, those outside of a few songs, had less electronica embedded to the live tracks, but still.

Re: Metric
Disappointing compared to the last two albums. I don't have a problem with the sound, but the songwriting feels weaker.
|
Re: Metric
I might be the odd man out who didn't care for Synthetica. Waiting for Pagans in Vegas to show up in the mail, but from the reviews floating around, I'm not as optimistic as I'd like.
The next album is coming really soon -- they basically recorded a double album but decided to release them separately -- and there are no electronic elements at all. Wondering if that might veer too far towards the other end of the spectrum. |

On first listen, I was pretty disappointed in it, but it is starting to grow on me now.

Re: Metric
I think you're right, this is synthy to the point of being inaccessible almost. And I love me some straight up synth pop and lots of electronica, so it's not like the genre isn't to my taste.
|
Re: Metric
I think the live versions of these songs have that added "oomph" of guitars during their live shows as opposed to the mix. Jimmy Shaw is a fantastic guitar player and really shred on some of the more synth tracks live, which surprised me as to the mix of this album. Granted, I'm not complaining. Fuck, i want to see them live again!
|
Re: Metric
Even better, they are super nice after shows - that's always welcome.
|
Re: Metric
Pretty let down with this one.
|
Re: Metric
This is growing on me. After 5 spins or so, I like most of the album - particularly the first half. Second half seems kind of boring
