Surprise release of "complete heartbreak album" comes two months early

Surprise: Björk's new album Vulnicura, the follow-up to 2011's Biophilia, is being released on iTunes worldwide over the course of the next 24 hours via One Little Indian. When it was announced last week, she said the release was initially
planned for March. The CD and vinyl versions will come out then.

Update: It's available on iTunes in the U.S. now.

Arca and The Haxan Cloak contributed to the album, as did Antony.

Björk has also announced a series of shows in New York City. Stay tuned for our new interview with Björk coming later this week.

Update: Björk has posted "the tale of making of this album". It begins:
i guess i found in my lap one year into writing it a complete heartbreak album . kinda surprised how thoroughly i had documented this in pretty much accurate emotional chronology .... like 3 songs before a break up and three after . so the anthropologist in me sneaked in and i decided to share them as such . first i was worried it would be too self indulgent but then i felt it might make it even more universal . and hopefully the songs could be a help , a crutch to others and prove how biological this process is : the wound and the healing of the wound . psychologically and physically . it has a stubborn clock attached to it .
there is a way out

Vulnicura:
01 Stonemilker
02 Lionsong
03 History of Touches
04 Black Lake
05 Family
06 Notget
07 Atom Dance [ft. Antony]
08 Mouth Mantra
09 Quicksand
It's out on iTunes and is also up on rdio.com. I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but I'm very excited. I loved Biophilia.

Looks like I shouldn't have waited. The album has been taking off rdio.com. That's a shame.

I wish I could preorder the vinyl and get the MP3s or something. This is a major release for me and I hate waiting.

Yeah, same. And I don't buy music from iTunes.

Interesting. As mentioned, wish they'd settled on Amazon first.

After Björk’s new album Vulnicura leaked onto the Internet two months early, the Icelandic singer responded by releasing it for immediate digital purchase. In a new interview with Billboard, Derek Birkett, founder of Björk’s record label One Little Indian, details the behind the scenes drama which ultimately led Björk to take the route she did.

According to Birkett, Björk consulted several industry friends, including Arcade Fire and Paul McCartney manager Scott Rodger, before deciding to release the entire album digitally. “Bjork ideally wanted to get the whole record out, and to cut a very long story short, she made a mostly artistic decision that she wanted to get it all out. She felt very passionately about it.”

Several physical retailers were angered by the decision, however, fearing an early digital release would hamper physical sales. Rough Trade Germany threatened to end its relationship with Björk all together.

One Little Indian also received pushback from Amazon after Vulnicura was initially released through iTunes, contending that the label was “engaging in a marketing scam.” Amazon had originally agreed to make the album available for free download to anyone who purchased a physical copy.

“Basically what happened is I panicked and gave it to iTunes because I told them, ‘All these deals are going down and we’re losing a lot of money,'” Birkett explains. “I told them to put it on the cover and we’d give them the exclusive. Then I realized the political implications of giving iTunes the exclusive.” Ultimately, Amazon agreed to sell Vulnicura.

Birkett says Björk has no plans to pursue legal action against the individuals responsible for the leak, as Madonna has done following the hacking of her own new album.

Albums "leak" to the internet so often. It's been going on for over ten years. At this point I assume it's a deliberate choice by the artist or management.

I'll assume you're being serious. Why? Isn't it just a by product of the digital age?

Is there some proof it helps sales?

I lost interest in Bjork awhile back for some reason, going to give this a chance.
