The Bob Dylan News & Appreciation Thread

Thought I'd start a more general thread for Zimmerman news.

Today, Bob announced his new album out February 3rd. It's an album of songs sung by Frank Sinatra called Shadows in the Night.

From the press release:

That's the key to all these performances. We knew these songs extremely well. It was all done live. Maybe one or two takes. No overdubbing. No vocal booths. No headphones. No separate tracking, and, for the most part, mixed as it was recorded. I don't see myself as covering these songs in any way. They've been covered enough. Buried, as a matter a fact. What me and my band are basically doing is uncovering them. Lifting them out of the grave and bringing them into the light of day.

Track listing:
01 I'm a Fool to Want You
02 The Night We Called It a Day
03 Stay With Me
04 Autumn Leaves
05 Why Try to Change Me Now
06 Some Enchanted Evening
07 Full Moon and Empty Arms
08 Where Are You?
09 What'll I Do
10 That Lucky Old Sun

Good idea for a thread. I haven't liked the rockabilly direction of his music since the '90s, and this Sinatra tribute album doesn't sound promising.

Re: The Bob Dylan News & Appreciation Thread

I've been loving the hell out of his Americana stuff lately-nearly everything after Time Out of Mind has been a home run for me. That said, as Sinatra had what was arguably the most amazing voice ever and Dylan, and this is coming from a giant fan, doesn't, I admit to skepticism. His flirting with crooning over the years has been better than expected, but I don't know how well a whole album of this will go. Plus what I love about Dylan has always been his writing more than his interpretations.

I'm a huge Dylan fan though, the creative rush of first discovering him still sticks with me, and I find myself returning to him more often than almost anyone else.

I'm also a big fan, but I love his '60s, '70s, and some of his '80s work ("Series of Dreams" is his best song, imo, and it's an outtake (!) from a mediocre album).
With a few exceptions ("Sugar Baby", "Mississippi", "Tweedle Dee &...", "Nettie Moore", "Spirit on the Water"), I just can't really get into his rough-and-tumble new style.

I'm happy I just went with the 2CD version of Basement Tapes. It's really not for me. It has it's moments but the "Another Self Portrait" collection was far more enjoyable.

If like to get that complete album collection, but the price is a little scary.

I have all of Dylan's officially released output and some not so official. My favorite artist of all time and I hope he and his band do with these songs what he was able to do with just an acoustic guitar and harmonica for Good As I Been To You and World Gone Wrong.

My top 5 albums of all time:

Blonde On Blonde
Highway 61 Revisited
Bringing It All Back Home
John Wesley Harding
Blood On The Tracks

Then there are other artist's albums.

Re: The Bob Dylan News & Appreciation Thread

Love Dylan, love Sinatra. Would I want to hear Sinatra sing "Tangled Up in Blue"? Probably not, but I'll listen to some samples of this.

Blood on the Tracks is probably top 5 all-time for me, but I oddly haven't gotten around to picking up many of the other albums. I did recently buy Freewheelin', and it has many great songs. I'm really tempted by some of the big collections but it might be overload.
