Add Motorhead to the list.

Lemmy, Fast Eddie, and Philthy -- the line-up from the first five albums -- are all gone.

Re: Bands whose founding members are all dead

this thread is probably dead but add The Neon Philharmonic to the list. Only released two albums, had a hit. Lead singer died in the early 80s and the last member died 2007

But the Duke Ellington Orchestra and the Count Basie Orchestra are on tour starting in August and September. The Miles Davis Quartet and the Bill Evans Trio didn't survive their bandleaders.

I have two for you: The Count Basie Orchestra and The Blackwood Brothers, a Southern Gospel band formed in 1934. Yeah, I'm a Yankee and never heard of them before I started researching bands that are running low on members. Every time a famous musician dies, such as one day last week when Taylor Hawkins croaked, I say something like, "We're running out of Foo Fighters!"

Anyways, the founding Blackwoods are all dead, but the band has continued with a slight name change. In case you're wondering, they have over 200 albums, sold 50 million records, and won eight Grammys. Other than them, I can't think of any other acts in modern history that answer your question afirmatively.

I love how a new member bumps this thread every two years and are then never seen again.

Re: Bands whose founding members are all dead

Seems like every band I’ve ever heard of still occasionally tours with whatever the current lineup is.

I imagine the only bands who have fully retired from touring are the ones that fit this thread.

I thought Jamaican ska pioneers The Skatalites would fit both requirements in this thread. When I saw them in 1990, they were geriatric. I figure they all gotta be dead now, but there's still a version of them that tours. While none of the founding members play on those tours, it turns out that one of those members is actually still alive.

The Ramones. All four of the original members are long gone.
