DETROIT, MI - Popular radio personality and voice actor Casey Kasem, a Detroit native, reportedly suffers from advanced Parkinson's Disease reportedly has only a few months to live, according to a representative for his wife. News of Kasem's failing health surfaced Saturday on the celebrity news website TMZ and came about a week after the New York Daily News reported that three of his children went to court to seek conservatorship over the ailing radio icon. The children are reportedly in a bitter feud with their stepmom Jean Kasem over his medical care. An excerpt from the New York Daily News story that surfaced earlier this month: "We've heard nothing, absolutely nothing from her, and we're very worried," said Kerri, 41. "My worst fear is that there's neglect and isolation going on," she said, claiming that Jean fired her dad's two favorite caretakers and won't allow his friends to visit, either. Casey Kasem, 81, was the host of the Top 40 countdown radio show "American Top 40" and the voice of Shaggy in the Saturday morning cartoon franchise "Scooby-Doo." He was born in Detroit and is the son of Lebanese immigrants. Kasem is a graduate of Detroit's Northwestern High School and Wayne State University. He worked as a DJ for FM 98 WJLB and lived in at least two buildings in what's now known as Detroit's Midtown area. A book called "Home in Detroit: Where They Lived ... in the Motor City" says Kasem lived in an apartment at 454 Alexandrine, located west of Woodward Avenue, and 3230 Taylor on the city's west side. The book also mentioned the Kasem lived at 646 Alexandrine, a building that is no longer standing. Figured this was the best place to put this. Sad news. |

I used too like him until I found out he was an Arab. No child of mine will ever watch Scooby-Doo.

I want a goddamn concerted effort to come out of a record that isn't a fucking up-tempo record every time we do a goddamn deathwatch post!

Re: Radio personality Casey Kasem reportedly gravely ill, close to death
I listened to his countdowns every weekend when I was growing up, and still listen to them on Sirius on the 70s channel every now and then. I'm a child of the 80s, so I really miss hearing his countdowns on 80s on 8.
SCREW YOU 80s on 8 FOR USING YOUR MORONIC MTV VEEJAYS TO DO THE COUNTDOWNS INSTEAD OF AIRING CASEY'S ORIGINAL VERSIONS. |
Re: Radio personality Casey Kasem reportedly gravely ill, close to death
What year did he stop doing his countdown?
Had to be in the 90s' cause that's when pop music began to suck. |
Re: Radio personality Casey Kasem reportedly gravely ill, close to death
I remember being at camp in northern Michigan and listening to the countdowns on the weekend. I can still remember Casey talking about how Rosanna (by Toto) was stuck at #2 for another week and being disappointed. I just looked it up and that was where the song peaked...never making it to #1.
No one did it better than Casey. |

Re: Radio personality Casey Kasem reportedly gravely ill, close to death
Always wondered what song was dedicated to the fucking dog dying.
I have a few complete shows on records (stations got them that way and played them on the air), ones before 1982 don't include commercials on the records though which was a bit disappointing. Found one show from 1971, which also had a guest host as Casey was out doing a movie. |

http://i.imgur.com/cKHRpGZ.png Because of the Negativland track, I had always assumed it was U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," but I guess that's not the case. Besides, those guys are from England and who gives a shit? |
Re: Radio personality Casey Kasem reportedly gravely ill, close to death
I remember he had a top 20 countdown show on TV in the 80's that would air on Saturday mornings.

I have about 300 episodes of American Top 40 I collected from original LPs and radio station CDs. They are fun to revisit (that's also how I got all the Long Distance Dedications to transcribe) |
Re: Radio personality Casey Kasem reportedly gravely ill, close to death
I have a few of those top 40 records as well, I think they were from 1983-1985 (since that's the era I listened to the show religiously). Picked them up at a flea market about 18 years ago. Totally forgot about them until now.

I am one of the fortunate few that got ahold of the Negativland CD before it was yanked from the market. Classic. |
Re: Radio personality Casey Kasem reportedly gravely ill, close to death
What was that transcription from? Glad I know what the fucking up-tempo record they came out of was now. Being a long-time fan of Negativland, I bought that "U2" CD the day it came out and didn't think much of it before all the attention started. Always thought the lawsuit from U2's record company (the band themself was actually OK with it) was stupid as the cover showed a U2 spyplane. But besides that, Casey Kasem himself wasn't too pleased about that getting out and threatened to sue if it ever came out again.

American Top 40 with Casey Kasem: The 1980s Pete Battistini AuthorHouse, 2010 - Biography & Autobiography - 512 pages Pete Battistini released "American Top 40 with Casey Kasem (The 1970's)" in 2005. Now comes the follow-up, "American Top 40 with Casey Kasem (The 1980's)." Battistini painstakingly documented approximately 425 weekly, Casey Kasem-hosted countdown programs from the 80s, and compiled individual program summaries for each week exclusively for this book. In addition, the text includes a complete list of all radio stations, in the U.S. and around the world, that carried the program. Coupled with numerous testimonials of both AT40 insiders and listeners, and more than a hundred illustrations from the 80s, this book is brimming with highlights of the greatest radio program ever! |

Update: Missing!
Casey Kasem's whereabouts unknown: Investigator ordered to track down ailing radio host A judge on Monday ordered an investigation into the whereabouts of Casey Kasem after an attorney for the ailing radio personality's wife said the former "Top 40" host had been removed from the country. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy ordered a court investigator and adult protective services to find out where Kasem is being treated and report back to the court. Kasem, 82, suffers from advanced Parkinson's disease, can no longer speak and has been in various medical facilities chosen by his wife, Jean Kasem. Casey Kasem's children have complained that they have been unable to see their father in accordance with an agreement with their stepmother. Daughter Kerri Kasem had sought a temporary conservatorship and was appointed her father's temporary caretaker on Monday. Her attorney, Troy Martin, said the family believes the entertainer has been taken to an Indian reservation in Washington state. Murphy's order came after Craig Marcus, an attorney who appeared on Jean Kasem's behalf at Monday's hearing, said he did not know where the radio personality was but knew that he had been removed from the country. "I have no idea where he is," Marcus said. The revelation brought stunned protests from Murphy and two of Casey Kasem's daughters, two of the entertainer's three children from a previous marriage. "Your statements concern me even more," the judge told Marcus, who declined to comment after the hearing. Marcus said in court that Jean Kasem had every right to move her husband as she saw fit. Murphy appointed a doctor to look into Casey Kasem's care and ordered a court-appointed attorney to find out his whereabouts as soon as possible. Casey Kasem gained fame with his radio music countdown shows, "American Top 40" and "Casey's Top 40," and was the voice of Shaggy in the cartoon "Scooby Doo." As temporary conservator, Kerri Kasem will have access to her father's medical records and other reports that have previously been sealed by court order. Kerri Kasem's case is the second one opened by one of the former host's children to try to gain access to their father and have some oversight over his care. A previous case by daughter Julie Kasem was dismissed after she reached a settlement with her stepmother, but the daughter said Monday that agreement has been breached. In a court filing last week, Kerri Kasem's attorneys wrote that the entertainer has been repeatedly moved without warning and his children have been unable to see him. The complaint accused Jean Kasem of elder abuse by isolating her husband from his family. "We've been troubled for a long time," Kerri Kasem said after Monday's court hearing. She said Murphy's orders will ensure that the truth about her father's care comes out. "Justice has been served today," she said. |
