Yeah Yeah Yeahs--Mosquito
I'm mostly stuck in the music of my youth in the 80s, but I am a huge fan of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I've loved each of their first 3 albums---I really appreciate the way they've kept their "sound" with each album, but approached each one differently. I would say the first was New York art/punk, the second was more like indie/college rock, and It's Blitz was more old-school synth stuff. Strong range of songwriting throughout, IMO.
I took a quick listen to the new album, and it sounds pretty strong to me--and I've got my tickets to see them for the first time in May--psyched for that! The first single was not my favorite thing on the album, but I'd say it's decent:

Finally, someone had the courage to start this thread, because I've been too lazy. But I checked back every day and couldn't believe it wasn't mentioned.
Love the YYY's and the first single is great. Can't wait to get this new album and plan to see them when they tour.

I used to really like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I'll listen to this album but I don't have high hopes for it. I didn't care for the first single.

^ Holy crap, now that was awesome. The hell, it must be my bad luck in always seeing clips or performances of the songs that suck? I don't care for the rest of her uncharismatic band.
I also like women who can fit an entire mic in their mouths.
That Sacrilege song was awful, though.

I'm only a casual fan of the band - though "Maps" is one of my favorite Rock Band songs - but this disclaimer at a recent show of theirs is pretty great:
(I admit to being guilty of this at shows, but I try to be quick about it when snapping a pic. I don't take videos, though; I've seen way too many shitty live ones on YouTube to know that they rarely turn out good and not worth an extra layer of distraction from the actual show.)

Re: Yeah Yeah Yeahs--Mosquito
On hearing the opening track of this album, a friend said “I didn't expect to be listening to new albums of the YYYs 10 years on!” And this is kind of understandable: of all the new rock bands of the early 2000s – The Strokes, The Vines, The Hives, The White Stripes – they had the most air of hipsterism, their kooky demeanour and New York clubbability making it understandable that some could think they were a trend-driven flash-in-the-pan sensation.
In fact it was their NYC compatriots The Strokes who all but collapsed under the weight of their own archness, while in contrast what drove the YYYs, for all their way-out outfits, stage antics and electro experiments, was more than anything unadulterated, un-ironic rock adrenaline. And it's that you can hear in that opening track, “Sacrilege”: a little bit of “Gimme Shelter”, a little bit of disco, a load of funky reverb-o-rhythm studio effects, a whole lot of punk and a walloping great gospel choir coda, all powered by a palpable need to share the electric buzz of great rock performance.
The echo box is almost the lead instrument here. From the spacious sparkly electro ballad “These Paths” and the spookily beautiful “Subway” to the bass heavy groover “Under the Earth” – which sounds as if Ennio Morricone had soundtracked a club scene in a '60s kung fu movie – and the sweaty punk groove of the title track, the instruments play along with their own reverberation, leading to a well-sprung, stoned lope throughout. The song structures themselves are not sophisticated, but they groove their way to satisfaction, and the hooks on almost every track are addictive for all their lack of subtlety. And that's the kicker: for all their bells and whistles, the YYYs are all about the direct delivery of pleasure, and manage it just fine once again.

I thought it was pretty weird and not all that good. There are some good songs on it ("Sacrilege" is great) but way too much filler.

After my first listen, I tend to agree. I love Sacrilege, then it gets pretty dull, but I did find that the album improved on the back half. Maybe the last 4 or 5 tracks were better and catchy. I even liked the song with rapping in it, even though I typically hate rap. It was still a high tempo, rock song, nice after so much dullness before it and even the rap kind of felt more like a rock rap than regular rap.

"Sacrilege" may be the best song they've yet done, but other than a few isolated tracks here and there, the album as a whole was disappointing.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are one the bands that I've loved after I discovered music that wasn't rap. Albums rarely do much for me the first couple of listens. I like to listen to full albums over and over. Hopefully this one will end up on equal footing with their other albums.
